My family and I are heading for port A for a week of vacation Sept. 15 thru 21. I am an avid freshwater bass fisherman with little saltwater experience accept for a couple of offshore trips where the deck hands did most of the work. I'm not going to take my boat so I'll be surf, jetty, and wade fishing. I would like to know will my bass gear hold up ambassador reals and falcon rods etc. Any type of rigs you might suggest, bait options, good places to start. Just looking for a relaxing week that includes some fun fishing. Would you suggest the surf, jetty, or wade the bays. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

your rod and reels are fine. spool up with 12-15 pound test, get some poppin corks and a quart of shrimp. fish the corks about 24 inches up from a medium size treble hook. go out at nite and fish on a pier known for specks. ask around the locals are quite helpful on locating one. hit me back if you have any more questions

What cowboysurfer said was right on target. Let me add that Horace Caldwell Pier at Port A is well-lighted at night and can produce excellent results during the 10pm - 2am hours, depending on the tides. the best spot is the 3rd bright light on your right as your walking from shore outward. it's over very shallow water. MOST IMPORTANT THING: LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY BAIT YOUR HOOK WITH THE LIVE SHRIMP!!!! With trout, you might as well throw dead shrimp away.
Speaking of shrimp, if you and your family want some fresh-caught shrimp for the table, check out when the PollyAnna will be returning to port. She trawls all night long then comes home around 8am and sells shrimp from her deck. $5/pound, heads on.
Anything I've told you about, just ask around and there's lotsa friendly locals. Also, I'm not sure exactly when, but sometime around mid Sept, I think the flounder start running. Ask around. You're going at an excellent time of year. Oh yeah, also ask about the Island Queen. She's a ferryboat converted to a channel/bay fishing boat. It's $25 for 4 hours. The way to see if it's worthwhile is be at the dock when she returns from a trip and see if those folks did any good. If so, book it.
here's a good website: http://www.portaransas.org/Flash.asp
any more questions, just ask.

The jetties are sometimes pretty good there. The south jetty is accessible by car. The north jetty can be reached if you take the jetty boat out of Woody's. It's like 7.50 or 10.00 or so for the round trip. One can also fish the surf on Mustang Island. I have caught lots of fish when the conditions were right in the area of mile marker #9 and towards fish pass jetties. You can get there by going to beach access road #2 and then south down the beach a bit.I enjoy light tackle fishing in the surf with top dogs, mirrolures, spoons and saltwater assassins. Live bait like shrimp, finger mullet, croakers, will work great too.
