Great! Going down for 4 days, and the forcast is heavy thunderstorms the whole time. Looks like we could have picked a better weekend; let's call G-dub and get him to slip the holiday to the right a week!

I braved the weather this morning and caught two very nice trout on topwater. Both a little over 20 inches. There was some lightning off in the distance which made me a little uncomfortable, but the wiind was calm and the water was glassy. Im going to try to fish Alazan bay tomorrow if I can.

Thanks TK. I've been reading a lot of your posts over this last week, and I'd like to say I appreciate all the info you've posted (and others like PP and TOO). We've got a beach house down the island a little ways for a couple days, so I think I'm gonna sneak out there when I can, and maybe try the fish pass if the weather breaks. I'm not sure if the house has access, but if it does, I'll keep in touch with TFF. Thanks again.

email me at outdoorsmanrsk@yahoo and maybee we can meet up for some fishing. If not, be carefull. Try your hardest to get some fishing in but dont risk getting struck by lightning by being in the water. If there is a storm pretty close just get out and wait for it to pass.

reading your post made me chuckle- I was on the Port A jetty this a.m. and watched all those storms brewing up, even saw a funnel cloud over the gulf. Lightning hit so close it made me tingle and I felt the boom when it hit. The good news is that the water was crystal clear, but from the two days i was there it seems they're only considering live bait, i think b/c of the clarity. I landed a nice Spanish Mac in the PINS surf Thurs. on a croaker, and a small speck on topwater Wed. at dusk. Hope the weather shapes up for you.

Yea its not smart being on a boat and in Lightning, you are kinda like a giant lightning rod moving across the water when you are running. My dad and some other guys are going out of Sargent tomorrow morning to the floaters in search of Mr. Blue Suit and some tunies.

We will be in PA from Wed - Sun this next week. Looking at the weather forecast, we may have some storms then.

My question is...how bad do the storms usually get this time of year. Not trying to ask a stupid question, as I know how bad they can be , just would like to know how bad the summertime popup storms are. We will be about 20 miles out.

I have waited some 42 years to fish the Gulf, Port aransas in particular, and would really like to be able to.

Also any help in what to do would be appreciated.

You are probably used to the crystal clear water of the Austin area but down here green water is pretty good. I fished the packery this morning and the water was glassy and had a good color for corpus. I caught several trout using nothing but bass assasins before a big storm blew in. Yea, you should never fish in a storm but I dont hesitate to fish when I have a window of opportunity. A storm off in the distance doesnt scare me none untill it gets closer.

I just got back from 5 days at Port A. Fished four straight days. Weather sucked. At least 5 storms a days hit us. Seas weren't very bad except durning the big storms. The worst I saw was 6-8s for an hour or so. Otherwise the rain just kept coming and coming. I have gotten the fishing bug out of my system. Caught a lot of fish in rainy conditions. I guess the highlight was a 56 pound ling on a shimano red/white butterfly jig.

On the way down I stopped off at Roy's tackle and he let me trade in the xh trevla for the xxh. I had never used the xh. I still didn't think the xxh is man-ly enough for my intensions.I tried my best to bust the rod. I couldn't break it. I checked the drag setting of the torsa after I had boated the ling. I had pushed it to 26 lbs and the rod held up. I was surprised.

My dad went on an overnighter this weekend and I would look at the radar and the areas around Boomvang and Nansen looked like they were getting pounded with storms but he said they only got sprinkled on a few times and it got up to maybe 4-5's for like an hour, and flat calm the rest of the time. They ended up with 4 YF to around 45 lbs, 4 dolphin to 39.9 lbs (which took first in the Lions club Freeport Tourney), a wahoo and more blackfin than you could count. Plus a few AJ's and other bottom fish.

go big or go home.
