Our lake is a relatively old lake that 8 surface acres and has absolutley NO vegetation (grass, weed, etc).
The lake struggles providing cover for fish. A couple of friends have similiar lakes on their property and have good vegetation in their lakes. The fishing in those lakes is much better.
Can anyone recommend a type of grass or vegetation that I can / should introduce? Avg water depth is 5ft, max is 12. Lake has little fluctuation and keeps a 2-4ft consistant level.
Any help would be great!!!!

I used to love to fish in lakes that had Lilly pads. Seems that the fish love to hide in them out of the sun.

Aquatic vegitation can and will overtake a waterbody. I'd advise use of trees or some other structure. Furthermore water chemistry has much to do with the productivity of a waterbody.

contact tpwd....a biologist. they will recommend a certain type of native vegetation and amount for your lake. do not go to another body of water and start transplanting vegetation....one, it is a felony to transport noxious vegetation, and even if ya dont get caught, it will comeback and poke ya right in the butt!!!

I would agree with placing brush piles. Cut green trees and drop them on slopes or drop offs in tight piles. Use green trees because it will sink and once it's on the bottom it will stay as long as it stays wet. Be cautious motto put to many at one time because your water body is not to big and you could cause a dissolved oxygen problem by putting too much vegetative matter in the water to decay at the same time.

Oh and DO NOT put any aquatic vegetation in your pond. Most the common ones (hydrilla, Eurasian milfoil, etc.) will completely sock in a pond of that size and depth and you will be fighting it and referring it for years to come.

if you want an eco friendly pond that will sustain aquatic life you will need vegetation. vegetation is what puts the oxygen back into the water, it also filters out harmful runoff and will keep the pond healthy. as stated if you put too many big trees in it you will deplete the oxygen......one more reason to have aquatic vegetation. do as you want, but you really need to talk to tpwd about native vegetation.... one gentleman spoke of hydrilla...this is a noxious plant and it is a federal offense to transport, or remove it from another body of water.....as i stated before. do your pond right, contact a local biologist.....doesnt cost anything.

Have bout 4 acre tank that was lined with cedars, over last 2 years now most of them are in the water. It has provided great cover for bait fish. Has worked well for me....Good luck
