I would like to get info on rigging finger mullet for offshore trolling. I would like to prepare and freeze some for use offshore when and if the wind will ever allow it. I would appreciate a good website or other info on this topic. While I am at it, the same info on rigging ballyhoo with 2 tandem hooks ????

I can't help you Kahuna since I've only used finger mullet for catching redfish but I was curious to see how you liked things here in Texas?

Cdstrange in answer to your question just look at the valuable info I received on my mullet question. Great info and support - thanks guys. My short answer is I love it here in Texas, if I only knew I would have been here sooner. First of all you, my electronic friends are great. Second so are my neighbors and last but not least I see my son and his 3 little ones once or twice a month instead of once a year. (My son and I have gone or tried to get offshore 3 times in two months, compared to once over the last 5 years) But what about fishing. That has been the primary great deal. Inshore I can catch all the sandtrout I want from my dock. At least twice a week we go fishing with my boat (Kahuna Kalai) or with my neighbor Ed's 28 ft Boston Whaler or with Charlie's 27 ft (???). When the weather is not good we use Norman's boat to go into the flats and drift for trout and redfish. I had the darnest time to catch my first Texas keeper red. My first two was to big 38.5 and 28.5 inches. Only last week did I get my first keeper. To sum up I am as happy as a pig in the biggest mud puddle you have ever seen!!! When I have this mullet thing licked I will post some guidelines that work and that you can use.

Glad to hear you're digging it. We'll have to get everyone together this spring and do some wading etc...so you'll get to know everyone. Happy fishing!

Just finished making stainless steel de-boners (3/8" & 1/4") to take out the backbone. Next step will be to catch the right size and rig em. With the cold spell I have not seen any small mullet in my are.

Rigged a few finger mullet yesterday. They are now in the freezer waiting for the first offshore opportunity.

Did you brine your baits? If so what did you use?

I was reading in saltwater mag. where the skipper uses a big hook and a smaller hook attached to the big hook via dental floss.the small hook is inserted into the top lip or jaw of the bait(live bait) and trolls in this manner with great success. Says it saves a lot of rigging time. sSays its great in saving time and can get fresh bait on the hook and in the water in a few seconds

I have had good results from non iodized salt and baking soda for brining my fresh baits. 1 box rock salt 1 box baking soda 1 bag of ice (crushed if possible) put all into an icechest with enough water to make a good slush. Throw the castnet and unload into the cooler. I like to allow overnight for brining before I remove baits and either rig and/or vacuum pack to freeze.

Next time I go to the grocery store I will buy the salt and baking soda and use your recipe. With the north wind blowing we have not had any finger mullet hanging around the lights on our lagoon. I hope they will be back with the weather change.
