Looking to tye streamers, poppers, and wholly buggers.
1) what could I get from Hobby Lobby or craft store?
2) Where do you get poppers? Can you make your own out of foam from craft store? Maybe using a dremil?
3) Hook size and design.
4) What is the regular chenile?
5) What eyes for popper?
6) Does thread color matter when tying?
Again sorry for ignorance any assistance appreciated.

Got plenty of lures but dad gum fish just wont cooperate. Wannabe fisherman in training.

Google is your friend! Fly tying has benefitted from Google and the Internet massively! There are plenty of tutorial videos out there as well as websites. Flyanglersonline, FlyFishVideo channel on YouTube, Davie McPhail's YouTube channel. That's the tip of the iceberg.

As for poppers, you can find resources for "roll your own" or simply buy pre-formed ones in kits.

BADDLEGG, let me see if I can start some answers for your questions.

1. You may find some of these materials in craft stores, but you need to know what you are looking for. Much better to visit a fly shop or big box outdoor store or check listings on eBay or the internet.

2. Popper bodies, in particular, will not be found in craft stores. Check a fly shop (local or online) or eBay. A search I just ran on eBay for "popper bodies" listed 84 items. You should find what you need there.

3. Streamer and woolly bugger hooks are similar -- typically long shanked hooks in sizes 12 to 2, depending on how big you want to tie them. Popper hooks are best if they have a wide gap (like a Tiemco 8089) and/or a "kink" in them (like a Mustad 33903) to hold the body in place.

4. Regular chenille can either refer to a type of chenille or a size of chenille. Regular chenille is typically less tightly bound and fuzzier than ultra chenille. Chenille can also come in sizes like small, medium (or regular) and large, which refers to its diameter.

5. You have lots of choices for popper eyes, from paint on, adhesive reflective, or "doll eyes". Your choice. The easiest to start with are probably the adhesive reflective eyes.

6. Thread color does not matter a lot. Most tyers like to have their thread color match the predominant colors in their poppers. Others swear by red, since it can simulate either gills or blood. Again, your call.

Baddlegg,

Here is a good fly shop from whom you can buy your tying materials at really inexpensive prices. They're out of Tallequah, OK (home of the Smallmouth Conclave), and they only sell at shows and on-line. Steve Couch's Golden Rule Fly Shop, 918-456-1903

2) You can make your own, but it's easier to buy them; I prefer soft-bodied to the hard-bodied ones.

1) For the popper body paint, we use Decor's Metallic Paint in Gold, Green, and Black--bought at a craft store.

For the face, we use Rainy's Foam Popper Paint bought at BPS.

3) Use this for Bass Hooks with the smallest being a size 6 all the way up to a 3/0.

Only WoollyBugger hook I use, and will use these for my beadchain eye streamers.

4) Typical chenille, in medium and ultra sizes; fuzzy like a pipe cleaner but more coarse and more fuzz.

5 & 1) Paint your eyes on, or Stick-on 2D, Stick on 3D, and Doll eyes; the doll eyes can be bought at a craft store.

6) Thread color I match to dominant color in fly--feathers and/or chenille for tail. I like UTC 140 or Danville 6/0.
