In this article, a claim is made that they are getting 85 mph on a tournament rigged 21' bass boat with a Tohatsu 115 with a modified gear ratio... http://www.spislandbreeze.com/articles/helm-12483-motor-bay.htmlThe distributor, in Dallas, began by testing the new gear ratio on a few of their new 115 HP motors, with unbelievable results. For instance, a 21-foot tournament bass boat (heavy) that normally has a 250 to 300 horsepower motor was now equipped with the Tohatsu 115 HP TLDI model and it ran around 85 mph. After a year or so of testing, there were no problems at all with the enhanced gear ratio on the bigger motor. Tough not to call BS on that one... Thoughts???

At the bottom of the article he says that he didn't notice any difference in top-end.

By that logic, I bet If you go down to a 90 you can get 100 mph.
Total BS.

Ok didn't read the article but the first thing that comes to mind is how long does it take to reach that speed? I would think the first gear must be a torque monkey to get that thing on plane and then to get up to 85mph that must take two miles! The gear ratio probably looks very odd on paper!

Article has it as on plane in 1/2 a boat lenght.

Horsepower is horsepower period. You can't change the gearing to get 300+ horsepower speeds.

Down force, gearing, weight can change top speeds. What I don't understand is how the gearing would work. You would need some TALL gears to get that kind of speed out of it and you would need a very short gear to get it on plane. As stated above 1/2 boat length and it's on plane...crazy.
