that's a ling, also called a cobia. great eating, but this one is too small to keep.

Jason,
That is a Ramorah....They make their living by attaching themselves to larger fish like sharks large redfish and even rays...when a big fish feeds they are convienently attached below jaw to clean up the scraps...thats the reason for the funky rough forehead. There is even evidence that early coastal indians used this fish to catch others

hey Barstow...i dont think it's a ramora...it don't have the big suction cup on the top of its head. looks like a cobia maybe...excellent catch for a pier

Nope....Its a ling/cobia. No doubt. Also...how can you say its too small? No way to judge its size.

it was about 22 in and about 3-4 lbs. I realeased it b/c i didnt know what it was and it wrapped the line around its tail. It ran like crazy and put a big fight, out of the 15 people on the peer no one knew what it was.

I'll be damned,

It IS a Cobia! I've never noticed one with the top white stripe so pronounced. Maybe because its a younger fish.

It is a Cobia or Ling. When young, they have pronounced white stripes that run the length of the body. As they get older, the stripes gradually fade and the thing will almost be completely brown in color. Nice catch but WAY to small to keep. These guys have to be giants to keep. I think 37 inches is the minimum. They are all over near shore right now or at least they were a few weeks ago. We didnt catch any that small but they are deff. out there. Nice fish and good pic. Had it been a remora, it would have a sucker on the top of its head and the dorsal would not be black spines like that. The dorsal of a remora would not be visible, it would be folded down and is white or clear in color. The remora also has a flat surface on top of head. You can stick those guys to the palm of your hand and they will attach, that cobia would fall str8 to the ground if you stuck his head against your hand...lol

Pretty cool to catch one of those off the peer. Too bad you couldn't keep it, they are great to eat!
