while trolling about 25 miles out of galveston today i caught something that looked alot like a small mackerel, but was fatter than any type of mackerel i've ever caught. was dark colored on top, and had lots of pretty blue mixed in. i actually kept the fish ... would've released it but it was spent by the time i boated it ... and filleted it to see what the meat looked like. was really dark ... like a tuna, and not like a jack. i've hit a number of fish identification websites, and it looks quite a bit like an escolar mackerel, or even a bluefin tuna ... which i guess are both in the same family of fish. so anyway, i'm just wondering what this silly thing is ... anybody know? ya reckon it's edible?

Hey Kristin: If it has real Red Meat then it Could be a Bonita which is in the Tuna family. They are very common in the Gulf of Mexico. Then there are the Black Fin Tuna and just maybe a small Wahoo if it has real sharp saw teeth and jumped a lot after you hooked it. Try clicking on JP Greesons Weekly Fishing report to your left under the AFFILIATES banner and then go to Fish ID Salt Water on the TP&W Hyper Link. That should help put a handle on the species ID for you. Good Luck and Use The TP&W Fish ID Charts Yall! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bazztex<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
