I saw a huge thrasher shark on the beach, caught by a fisherman at PINS when I was about 10 0r 12. Pier Rat, is the girl shown with the bull shark named Lacy Cox out of Rockport.

Dont forget Sand Tigers,

Sawfish,

Scallopped and Greater Hammers,
(scallopped have the bumps in the hammer, greaters are straighter across)

Nurse Sharks,

and I'm sure there are still more...

Thrasher? From PINS? I'd like to see pics of that. That would be a one a kind fish from the beach. I've seen and heard lots of strange fish caught from PINS, but never heard of a Thresher shark caught before.

Never heard of a thresher caught from the beach, anywhere, either. Guys dont plan on catching a mako...or even seeing one for that matter anywhere in Texas within 5 miles. Surprised I forgot lemons and nurse! I just mentioned the sharks the got big. Oh and sawfish are even more rare than makos. I heard of a sawfish being caught in jupiter FL awhile back though. Aren't sand tigers endangered? I can never remember. Sand bar sharks get big here in texas, 226# to be exact. I'll list every shark in Texas, even small ones....
Atlantic Sharpnose
Bigeye Sixgill
Blacknose
Blacktip
Bull
Dusky
Finetooth
Lemon
Longfin Mako
Shortfin Mako
Nurse
Oceanic Whitetip
Dogfish-cuban
Dogfish-smooth
Dogfish-Spiny
Hammerhead-Great
Hammerhead-Small Eye
Scalloped Hammerhead
Sandbar
Silky
Spinner
Sand Tiger
Thresher
Tiger
Sharksucker
I'm pretty sure thats all of em.

Lemons and Nurses do get big...14+ for nurses, 10-12+ for Lemons...

Sawfish were once pretty common, as were sand tigers.

Pier Rat, Don't forget about the monster Bonnethead!..lol.

As far as the Mako's go from the beach, There will be more caught. I know of 4 taken from the beach at PINS, and the one I came across that washed up. Nobody targets Mako's from the beach, that's why they are "unheard of". But there is a new breed of sharkers out there that fish the winter water. There WILL be more caught!

Yeah I said I forgot lemons and nurses. Ah..I even caught a bonnethead 3 days ago! How'd I forget. I know of the mako's caught from the beach...I'm just saying its so rare you shouldn't plan on seeing one. I've seen pics of HUGE sawfish (14'+) and knew they were somewhat common awhile back...didn't know about sand tigers. COOL!

Troutboy,

I am down in Rockport/Aransas Pass Area a lot. Do you know of any spots close by that have good surf fishing?

I never set a hook half-a**, when I set the hook, I rip the lip.

RIP THOSE LIPS!!!

Ripthelip, I don't surf fish around Rockport/Aransas. My goto spot is past the 15mm on PINS. I do go to "fish pass" on a short trip after work when the fishing boards are slow. Most of the time, If I have a short window to fish, I'll take my yak down the street to the boat ramp in Ingleside and fish the cove.

It sounds like you are questioning me about the thrasher. I live on the beach and am either surfing or fishing nearly every day for the 24 yrs that Ive been alive. I think that greatly increases my chances of seeing one of these sharks. It was quite big and with a tail like that it is one of those things you remember seeing. The more that I think of it it may have even been at the fish pass jetties that I saw it. The place doesnt matter just that I saw it caught by a man on the beach. Anyways, I have not seen one in over a decade since then.
