Got a pic of this handsome creature as i was pulling into a parking slot across from one of my favorite deep night fishing haunts! Took this pic around 12:45 PM. I am pretty sure it's a rat snake, but dang if he didn't have the spittin' image coloration of a copperhead!  Anyone know for sure? Wish I had gotten a better pic! Rudy

So far away, hard to really say. My vote is a Copperhead. I think the Rat Snake is darker grey to black.

The picture is not good enough to tell. If it is a copperhead all these things must be true:
1. The head will be triangular like a spear head, with a distinct neck
2. The pupils will be elliptical, not round.
3. A pit between eye and nostril
At night determining the shape of the eyes might be a little daunting. I would keep my distance.
In any case it is not bothering anything, and there is no reason to kill it. Those who kill any snake they meet are showing cowardice and ignorance. I stepped out of my front door a few minutes ago and found a beauty sunning himself on my porch.

You fish at night with those things around? Man you've got some cojones. Seeing them during the day usually scares me away...

Too big for a copperhead and the coloring is wrong. coloring doesnt look wrong too me.... It is pretty big, but I have seen and killed copper heads that big before.... my vote goes the the copper head...

Colors mean nothing, snakes evolve to their surroundings. If you got a clear look at the eyes and they looked elliptical it may of been a copperhead. Either way I hope you let it live!
