After reading what the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council has done to the offshore fishing in June i'm thinking of canceling my families offshore trip I planned for mid June. I'm not going to spend $500 bucks to bring home a few Red Snapper and that's it!! Why would they torture the recreational fisherman like this. Unless someone can convince me that this is a mistake and the trip is well worth the $500 I plan on spending the money just fishing off the piers and jetties. I'll buy my Red Snapper at HEB!!

They closed amberjack in June/July and grouper is closed until Sept. You will have to make 3 separate trips if you want red snapper, amberjack, and grouper. Looks like to me the offshore trips this summer are going to be a lot of catch a release.

Right here in black and white http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...ate#Post6081941Some other groupers like skamp, black, etc. are still open but gag grouper is the most frequently caught grouper off the Texas Coast. Also, click on the the original author's screen name and see all of her posts. I appreciate her work and keeping us updated. I certainly do not have have ill feelings toward her. The Gulf Council on the other hand is a different story.

It sure does suck, but that does not mean you can't catch and release.... Make sure you book with the right guys and you'll bring home a limit of 2, 20lb snapper per person. Also, there are other species of grouper that are caught regularly, that aren't affected by the regs. Kingfish is still game and so are Dorado and Cobia. You can get them almost anywhere that time of the year. I wouldn't cancel. Go fish...have fun! The 2 fish limit for Snapper is what it is. There are plenty of beeliners and mangrove snapper you can catch and kill.

No size or bag limits on them yet.

Guys, talked with my outfitter and the trip is still on. How do the other species of Snapper and Grouper compare to Red Snapper and Gag Grouper. I cant speak to the grouper question from experience, but best guess is other species are just as tasty. On snapper. My personal opinion and that of many other people is that B-liners also known as Vermillion are better eating than red snapper. I have caught Lane Snapper and they are also just as tastey. I dont know about Mangrove Snapper, but would assume they are also fine table fare. I would say that 98% of the people cant tell the difference between 15 inch red snapper and a 15 inch B-liner on a plate. Last comment. I have seen many, many, many B-liners marked as red snapper in the grocery store. They does this by calling them by their color instead of by their species which conveniently misleads most people who dont fish for what they eat. You will enjoy the table fare.
Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

Lane's and Bee-liners are just as good as red, just not as big. Other groupers are good too. You just have to search for 'em since you can't choose which fish bites your hook.
