I am new to this drop shot fishing any help will be greatly appreciated, what type of knot is the prefered knot, how much distance between the weight and hook works best, and what type bait works well on a drop shot I have seen the pros on tv use big worms and some use really short worms its hard to know what to buy to start with.I am new to posting but have been reading this forum for a long time and have picked up some great techniques from time to time hopefully some of you more accomplished fisherman will help me out.

10# power pro braid with 12# Berkley big game as a backing. 10-15# Seaguar InvisX Leader tied by a double uni know, # test depending on cover. Zoom Finesse worm, Owner Down Shot hook tied with a palomar then bring line back thru from main line side to tag end. TD tungsten skinny drop shot weight 12-18" from hook, wrap line thru clevace twice to ensure connection so you don't flip/cart it off. Jiggle lightly but often!

Hope this helps and feel free to Pm or call to book a trip with me on Lake Fork or if you have any questions. We had 40-45 on the ole drop shot today! It's almost all I have thrown for 2 months but it's been whacking them!

+1 on the Owner Down Shot suggestion, thats a great hook. You want any drop shot hook positioned so the hook point is up, promotes better hook up in top of fishes mouth.

in addition, I sometimes use a 3/0 light wire worm hook and rig my bait weedless, like you would for a t - rig, same palomar, just keeps your bait from getting hung up if/when you are fishing around anything a exposed hook will hang on.

Some fish this set up in deep water vertically, which works great, but i've also had luck in shallower water casting a drop shot out away from the boat aways 15-25 and work it back the same way I would if fishing it vertically.

You want to feel the bait moving, but you dont want to be picking the weight up of the bottom, you'll feel it, it just takes a bit to get the hang of it.

I use a spinning rod, and keep my index finger on the line all the time, in the dead of winter when I drop shot the most, feeling and watching your line for any indication of a bit is a must.

Too many danged knots...

Spool up your reel with 15# Seaguar InvisX and tie a palomar knot onto your hook and leave the tag end about 18" long. Stop over-analyzing the technique and go fishing...

The Owner downshot hook is good but I use a hook marketed by Roboworm called a Rebarb hook. Get it from Tackle Warehouse.. A 3/0 lightwire for Zoom Trick works or 2/0 for smaller Finesse worms.

If you don't get bit on this, you aren't around any fish. Just sayin!

or keep it even more simple...
10 pound Seaguar
size 1 Gamakatsu drop/split shot hook
3/16 skinny drop shot weight or bell sinker

look up Roboworms or ZZ worms

Liek Ken said, One knot is it. Tie a Palomar knot through the hook and leave about an 18" tag end. adjust the weight accordingly. just make sure the hook is facing up not down.

palomar and 8# test smile when you come to hubbard you will realize 18" is way too long. 8-12" is perfect. and you can flip that up into boat stalls. wink

spinning rod for me. i tried baitcaster with 8 and 10# test line and it kept getting behind the spool and into the side plates. I keep the finesse stuff on the spinning reel.

COdy Malony posted about a Falcon spinning reel I want to try. its a 2000 sized for a good price. I have been using a shimano sedona, but i wear them out after a year of use.
