I have never fished this rig before. Thinking about getting into it to expand my skills. How deep is it normally fished?? I really know nothing about when and where to use it! Baitcast or spinning gear??

Depends on where the fish are. Later in the year I would fish it off deeper points and humps. Right now they are catching fish in pretty shallow water at Fork on a drop shot. Either working it by cover or even throwing it out and slowly working it back in. My belief is the intended presentation is straight down under the boat in deeper water when the bite is tough. Definitely want to use spinning gear. I use 30# power pro with a 15# Seguar Invisx leader.

I dont exaggerateI just remember BIG !!!

I have had a lot of success fishing it in summer months around deeper boat houses. Just a subtle approach.

JMO...OK? I finally started drop shot fishing with a guide at Amistad this past January...it's addicting because it presents the bait off the bottom and you have only your weight to feel for bites...it's fun and effective. But there are beginning to be a lot of adaptations. I say BS to spinning gear, very light line and small hooks and baits. I tie my san diego jam knot and tie on a bell sinker, 3/8 is my choice, I use bait vasting gear and would use 1/O Gama EWG, 12 lb Seaguar Invisx or 15 lb Trilene floro.

A great bait is a 5" Tornado.

At a lake like Amistad or Alan Henry where you may have your boat right against a rock wall and you're pitching a drop shot ahead of you close and parallel to the wall in 30' water, you may fish almost vertically, but on less severe structure you can pitch the bait 30'.

Did a lot of drop shot fishin with Cody Malone on Fork. He is the man you need to talk to. We caught a ton of fish using this rig. We were using spinning gear with braid. Good luck! It is addicting once you get it down and start getting some bites!

I would be drinking but I have a Fishing problem.
