That trip looked like a freakin' blast. My arms would have felt like they were the size of Arnold's after that haul. Ever catch any bottom fish like snapper or grouper on those jigs?

yes. we catch groupers and snapper just as well with the jigs as with bait. they are a awesoome way to fish but the jigs and the jigging system can get fairly expensive with the high speed reels, soft rods, spectre, assist hooks, an assortment of jigs, and the ice to keep your catch cool...rick

www.islanderscustomtackle.com check out the sea majic jiggin rods! Chris makes em for spinning reel applications ae well. I am waiting on my 400 gram split grip jiggin rod to pair up with my Avet LX. I have felt his 600 gram jiggin stick and it would hold a tld20 or the likes -very well- actually a smller Tiburon SST would be the shiznits on that rod! Crank the drag and PULL them suckas up from the depths! The 600 gram rod weighed about the same as my heavy Gloomis 7.5' Bass rod!!! I cant imagine what the 400 gram wieghs! with spilt grips on the bottom-it'll be a sweet custom setup that will yank the lips off them bottom suckers!

Hi Rick,
Jigging is an expensive hobby no doubt, during jigging we are constantly working the jigs which means the rod and reel is constantly in motion, working full time; taking jerks, pulls and abuse etc. That is why only quality tackle can handle the stress and LAST.
I have done 3 trips so far bringing customers on jigging trips in LA with Capt.Mike Ellis. Every single one of them claimed its one of the best fishing trip/experience they've had. I usually advise them not to bring their own tackle but use tackle which is provided for but there are a few who preferred to use their own faithfuls, less than half a day into jigging; rods broke, reels don't give enough drag to stop fish, setup too heavy etc and they have to use what was provided and it wasn't too long before each will start exclaiming... shitez, I should have use this! afterthat their tackle was left to gather salt for the rest of the trip.

randy i agree with you 100 percent. the right reel matched with the right rod loaded with the right line attached to the right jig is a fish catching magnet when agressively worked.
it seems you are creating a lot of interest in california and the orient over our little known gulf of mexico fishery. keep up the good work and the video's coming in...rick

Rick, I think of all the ocean surrounding US, the GOM has the best fishery, temperate waters still gives the best gamefishing.
Those oil rig multiplies the factor, they are like giant FADs dotted all along the gulf, you guys are very fortunate to have such good fishing within driving distance!
When I looked at the nav chart of the gulf, I saw many many potential fish holes like rock piles, wrecks and pinnacles but I guess very few would want to spend the time and resources to look for them with those easy oil rigs. If I have the opportunity I will like to explore deeper fish holes like 400-600ft, I am sure there are mama AJs lurking there.
California is not a conducive environment for jigging, most of the species found here are lethargic except for yellowtails but yellowtails are migratory fish, they dont stick to one location like AJs and groupers so getting them is a hit and miss affair. Furthermore west coast anglers are very stubborn, its difficult to change something that is going on for decades. When I was on one a 2 day baja coast trip, I was using a stella 8000 and the deckie came to me and told me to put that toy away and use something appropriate!! and we were catching cods that rarely go more than 10#!!! I thought the Stella 8k was an overkill, wished I had a 4000 size!
