Most people will say they don't use swivels. I use a swivel on the slab and also on the fly above it. I don't cutting line all the time. Johnny

I use 2 swivels when using a fly and slab. I use 1 swivel when using a slab only. Keeps down on line twist.

Stupid question - what is a "fly and slab"? I can guess - but it is just a guess.

If you do, get a high quality one. Tie one on ,hook it to something solid Pull till something breaks. If is the swivel, get some bigger/better Ones. You don't want it to be the weak link in your tackle.

Nope can't say I have ever used a swivel on a slab before. Never had a twisting problem using slabs. Even when burning them in.

I tie a double clinch knot and yes I use a swivel. It keeps the line from twisting. If I tie a jig above my slab I only use one swivel above the jig. I do not catch a lot of fish as well, you might wait for some of the experts on here to chime in for their opinion.

I always use a size three snap swivel. Lke Sandjohnny, I use on both slab and flies. I have not had a failure yet with the swivels. Matter of fact when I get hung and have to pull free it is always the knot or line that breaks. About the only time I tie directly is if I have something I might change the action on.

Swivels just add another cost to your trip and slow you down, if you are fishing slabs correctly(on or near the bottom), you will break off lots and lots of them. You want to be able to tie a palomar knot in the dark, with one eye tied behind your back in less than ten seconds. Usually I don't even use a fly above the slab, yeah once in a while it seems pretty cool to catch two at time, but if you are on them good it can be more trouble than it is worth.

What about 3-way rigs? Using a slab for the weight and some type of floating crank or something other a fly a few up off the bottom? RS.

Break off lots and lots? You are dragging them not bouncing them off the bottom. Maybe your lakes are different than mine.
I use a swivel because if I have 3 people in the boat that don't know how to fish I can quickly switch them between baits or they can do it themselves. I use high quality swivels. In rough water it's also easier.
