I would appreciate any info on a good, reputable person for trolling motor repairs in the San Antonio area. I need help with a 82lb Motor Guide Great White. I must have a short or something because once I plug in the power cord, the motor will come on by just wiggling the handle. Sometimes it goes forward and sometimes in reverse. All without turning the handle to the "ON" position.

Thanks.....Richard

Try Wayne at The Boat Shop -> 659-7410. Does good work and treats you right. Not open on the weekend, so give him a call on Monday.

Had that same problem before. I believe the circuit board ended up being replaced. There is really no "repair" to be done these days. If a part does not work right, they just replace the whole dang things. Just a little FYI for you in case you were thinking about getting out with only a $100 bill.

Not to overstep the advise partime gave, as he lives in the area, but just for another reference, I have seen the shop in Boerne get good reviews here on the TFF.

Good luck

Cool thanks. Just called The boat shop and they do not work on trolling motors.

I guess I am making the hour drive out to Boerne.

FYI..I've talked with Waypoint marine in New Braunfels because they are a certified Motorguide repair facility and there is nothing good I can say about thier pricing. After saving myself $550 getting my last trolling motor repaired else where, and now getting a qoute at 3 different places that are 70% lower than thier qoute this time around I am through with them. Where do they buy thier parts? The cable I need replaced, boats.net has for $15.80 and they qouted me $150. The brush card assembly board I paid $35.80 for, they qouted me $450. That doesnt even include thier $98/hr labor with minimum 1hr labor.

from the outside looking in. It sounds like they are qouting you a digital conversion. In which case they are right on. Basically rebuilding your trolling motor.

Man with bills racking up like you guys are talking about I am sooooo glad I can work on my own stuff without much worry.

I have broken down many trolling motors in my day and you will be surprised at how easy they if you just know a little bit about how electricity works and how to test wires and a little mechanical engineering.

For example-I got a beat up MinnKota Riptide digital at a flea market for $50. I asked to have it hooked up to see if the motor turned and the guy hooked it up to his truck battery and the thing barely turned on because of the low 12 volts and I saw enough and I said SOLD! I got it home and took it apart and found out how easy these things can be if you have a drawing that I got from the internet. Google your model I bet you find schematics on it.

I cleaned that thing up and replaced a few parts and got a new remote and got it running 100% for little over a total investment of $250. These things new are well over a thousand!! I sold it to a relative for a good profit.

I would try messing with your trolling motor before you commit to a big bill at some repair shop. You might shock yourself at how easy it can be fixed and at a low cost.

But thats just how I was taught...Don't spend money you don't have to!

So basically what your saying skeeter151 is you found a trolling motor went through it ,fixed it and sold it to your RELATIVE for a profit. Hate to be a family member that bought something you experimented with. Might be a sticky situation. But i agree theses things are so simple to work on.

Hehehe.... come on guys it's not like I charged my own relative retail prices?? He knew exactly what I paid and what I did to fix it and he helped me out to pay for a guided fishing trip in Louisiana. Profit can be counted in other ways besides dollar bills. lol

All I was trying to say is you can try to fix it yourself and save yourself some money.
