Did you put on the BFG ATs or MTs? I have heard that a mud tire will cut your MPG and the BFGs are pretty agressive.

Its not the tread that eats up the mileage , its the heavier 10 ply tires. I lost a couple highway mpg going from factory BFG Pass rated tires to Nitto 10 ply A/T tires, but they weigh like twice as much as the factory tires do.

2010 Tundra Grade 4x4 5.7L 10-Ply Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 275/65/R18
I love my truck but my mileage is terrible. If I run 70 on the highway I might get 15.5 mpg. If I get non-ethanol gas, I might get 16.5. Around town, 13.5. I run Mobil 1 synthetic and try to keep my air filter changed regularly, but it's not too good right now. It does tow like a beast for my 22' Blazer Bay and my 30 travel trailer, but only gets about 8.5 mpg pullin the TT.

My understanding is that changing the air filter does not help the MPG much it is more about power. I take mine out and blow it out real good with the air hose every oil change. With the price of some of today's filters you might be better off saving money on the filter. I just got a maintenance email from Toyota and they did not even claim imprioved MPG with a filter change. Last time gas got this high all fo the stores and shops were pushing the MPG stuff.

Stump Jumper,
Sorry for the late response have been on vacation in AZ. I have BFG AT's. Cub was right on the fact that it has something to do with the aggressiveness but it is more the 10 ply tire that makes the difference. I have had the same thing happen on every truck I have owned where i have put on the BFG tires. You lose a little mpg on the hwy but what you gain in traction, off-road, and in bad weather is more than worth it.
Also, air filter does not make much of a difference unless it is dirty and plugged. As long as it is clean you should be good. I put in a lifetime KN filter on mine and it is a little more up front but is better in the long run if you take care of it.

2003 Tacoma Double Cab, 3.4 V6, Cooper Discoverer H/T's, 15 mpg when towing 17' bass boat... 20 mpg on highway... somewhere between running around town...
I also do not run my truck very fast... or at high RPMs...

I have 2007 double cab 2wd with the 5.7 V8. I consistently get 20+ going to Louisana (600 miles rounmd trip-all flatlands)running 70 with the cruise set. I have gotten 14-16 pulling my 19' Ranger to Orange, Tx. and back aeveral times (65 mph). My everyday driving (all inclusive) is 17-18, and that includes an occasional trip with the ATV & trailer but very little city driving after all Pittsburg ain't very big and Mt. Pleasant is not much larger.
