High pressure, low pressure. How does it affect the bite and why? My experience seems to show low BP has fish more active. This morning my barometer was pegged out on high and nobody was doing any good (from the bank) Enlighten me please.

If the pressure is 30.20 or above, stay home. High pressure gives them a headache.

I completely dissagree with tommy. I have caught lots of good fish with pressure that high or even greater during the winter. I know it effects the fish but I wouldn't stay home because the pressure is so high. The pressure gets that high all the time so I would have to think they are semi use to it. I think of it like allergies, people have allergies all the time but they don't stop everything because of it. They find a way to live with it.

High Pressure or rising pressure = Fish deeper waters ...
Lower or dropping pressure = Fish shallower water depths ...

Feel the bite ,set the hook and bruise a rib ...

I think the main factor that affects the fish is the penetration of light, I think it actually hurts thier eyes if they get toomuch. I think the rain oxygenates the top of the water, and causes them to rise in the water column. The reason for lack of feeding on a bluebird day after a front, is probably because they ate like kings during and before the front, when the skies were cloudy ,and the temp was cool, and they had more places they could roam and feed because of the lack of high light penetration during the front. Same reason crappie hang on the top of brushpiles in the early AM, the light isnt very intense, then as the day progresses they go deep, same reason they go to bridges at midday,.. the water temp doesnt change that drastically, especially a few feet below the surface, but the light penetration does. If you leave a live crappie in a bucket exposed to sunlight, the vessels in his eyes will burst, thats the red blood lines you see. thier eyes are sensitive. cool

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

maybe we need to start paying more attention to the daily UV index. something else that makes me believe the light theory, is that most stained water lakes I fish, I find the crappie shallow during bright summer days , and on clearer lakes they are deeper.

The barometric pressure effects fish and mammals alike. So If you feel like going fishing, they are biting. If you don't feel like going fishing, they aren't. If you go fishing and catch fish, you are fishing in the 10% of the lake that has fish. If you go fishing and don't catch anything, then you are fishing in the 90% of the lake that doesn't have fish. And fish move a lot .... Thoughts from a jon boat!

I agree. There have been plenty of times this past winter (including today) that the pressure has been above 30.02 and we've hammered them. It probably has some affect on them but minimal in my mind if you find forage and active fish.

+1 , i also caught alot of fishes when that barometer was high and when it was low. But, what realy gets me is when that cold front come-in and those fishes just completely shut-off. hmmm
