I'm new to the forum and I live on the coast. Well with the wind as bad as its been I've been trying my luck at some jug and limb lining instead of getting tossed around on the bay. I've had a little success with catching a few small flatheads in the river near the house but my question is when looking for the ideal spot for a limb line or a place to set a jug what do you look for. I caught 2 under willow trees just hanging over the bank 2 weeks ago and last weekend I caught 4, 3 of them from root balls and the smallest one he came off a jug in deep water in a bend. The first weekend everything looked good and after and 2 trips I think I'm getting better at picking out there hiding spots but any advise would be helpfull. I'm gonna try this weekend again and see what happens.

Try setting a few drop lines in shallow water.(3 to 5 feet deep) Use hand size sunfish. Make sure they are alive. Any bait fish good size alive. If your catching smaller fish use bigger live bait. Set the lines in shallow water. Flatheads feed in sandy shallow flats. Large flatheads rarley bite on dead or stink bait. Younger smaller yellas will more often. I set my drop lines out this weeknd for the first time this year and caught 5 flatheads. 1 5pounder, 2 8 pounder, 1 11pounder, and 1 28 pounder. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Thanks, I remember a few places with lots of willows hanging over some 3-4' deep places I'll try a few lines there on my next trip.

If you can find a high bank in the bend of the river with a sandbar or shallow with current set the line on the high bank or deeper drop-off. Big yellers love those spots...

I've found a few spots like that too that we've put jugs and have only picked on small one about 2#s but the current is pretty much nonexistant right now.

If you know of a spot like that with a washed-out bank or a overhang or with a fallen tree or up-rooted stump place a set line there ... those are prime spawning areas they should be headed that way from now to the end of June depending on how much water y'all have flowing.

The first night we got there at dark so we pretty much just tossed them out around some bends with no ryme or reason to where we put them. Well after having 40 baits out all night and only picking up 2 fish I started reseaching. The second trip we placed them around trees in the water a couple root balls and an old wooden headwall and picked up 4. What I've figured out is bait and line placement and type of structure look to be a big factor. We've been using large perch 4-7" and goldfish so I dont think its the bait. What about rocks and rip rap along the bank. I found one 75 yard stretch that it looks like they put concrete rip rap from the top of the slope all the way to the water and I imagine there has got to be some that rolled off in the water below. Would this be a good spot since thier fixing to spawn and its the only spot in the 7-8 miles that I've traveled that has concrete rocks.

yep rocks are great places too, any type ledge or concrete they can get under to fan out a nest will hold them..
