It's been couple years since we were down to Rockport. We found a cafeteria in Sinton on the Hwy from Rockport at the RailRoad tracks that served a Sunday lunch that was almost worth the trip from Dallas by itself. My question ..is it still open??? I sure hope so as we'll be back doen later this summer I think. This is east of the Hwy up from AP on the main street and we've had to park several times across the RR tracks to find a place. Ron

Is the place you are talking about the butter churn (or something like that)? If that is it there are cars there every time I pass by.

Never knew the name. Stopped originally couple years ago as we came up the back Hwy from Rockport into Sinton, Hwy 188, on a Sunday looking for someplace to stop that I could park the DeepV. After traveling for a living for 35 years I've learned that if there is a full parking lot in front of any kind of restuarant then there has to be good food inside... and the parking was covering both sides of the street for a block in an otherwise deserted downtown area. I parked the boat across from the place on the south side of the RR tracks. Next trip without the boat was the same way at 2ish on a Sunday. Still had to park across the rr tracks and the line of people was out the door. Great food both times, lots of choices, all you could eat menu, good service and very inexspensive at ?$6 a plate or so. I think they close mid day during the week and reopen for supper, but are closed Sunday evenings if I remember right. I like to use this route and avoid the Aransas Pass to Rockport dogleg, and unless I have another reason I never go thru Victoria anymore coming down from Dallas. However if anybody is coming from the Brenham/LaGrange area I've found a german style country butcher shop between Industry and Round Top on Hwy 1457, or about 10-15 minutes south of Brenham on Hwy 389 and then left or south about 2-3 miles on 1457, that may make me change the route home and do the loop from Hwy 77. Double thick, smoked pepper bacon for $2.69 a lb last month, I bought 10 lbs to last me to dove season when we go visit the Houston relatives again at Lake Fayette farm...probably not nearly enough bacon though the way I'm going thru it. Great pepper summer sausage @2.69 lb, smoky links, and the smoked ham is outstanding. B-Law sez their beef is the same way... all local live stock and corn fed. I'll be bringing an extra empty 94 qt cooler next trip just to go to the butcher shop with!!! If I can find their business card again I'll post the phone number 'cause they are well worth the 2 hours extra time back to Dallas from the coast. Ron PS Eckermann's Meat Market, 409-836-8858, 2543 FM 1457. Ya'll check this place out and you will not be disappointed. RV

Wiley,
I will be heading to Port A this Friday to fish blue water if the weather allows. I should be in Sinton around 1:00pm. Sounds like a restaurant worth looking for if they are open.
I am on a never ending quest to find the best route to Port A from DFW. For this trip, I am planning to take I35 to Waco, then 77 to Sinton, then drop down to Aransas Pass. What do you think?

i live by Waco . I go to San Marcos and take 123 and stay on that till i belive is 183 . it stops at a T . That is 183 . take a left strait into Sinton . only snag is what time you go thru Austin . I do not like 77 . Just my 2 cents worth

I've been the 123 route. It would be great if it weren't for the traffic getting through Austin.

Yeah the I-35 exit at hwy 123 by the WAlMart in San Marcos thru Seguin and then left at Karnes City and south thru Kennedy is the shortest fastest route from Dallas. The only slow stretch is between Sam Marcos and Seguin, past Seguin it is rock n roll highway with very few lights and slow spots. At the stop light in "Downtown" Sinton I cut left on hwy 188 to go to Rockport. The family style place is on your right in the last storefront building of "town" as you cross the RR tracks at the south end of town. If we are going to AP or PA I go straight at the light, and then turn onto hwy 35 into AP To go to Corpus thru Robstown or further south down Hwy 77 from Robstown take the exit north of Sinton over to I37 at I think it is close to Skidmore rather than go thru Sinton. Elmos Roadhouse on I-37 in Robstown east 1 or 2 exits from Hwy 77 also used to a great place. The only other decent way from Dallas is to cut east on Hwy 7 just south of Waco at Eddy over to hwy 77. I avoid the Hwy6 turnoff in Waco because of all the stoplights on hwy 77 between hwy6 and hwy 7. Take Hwy 77 into Victoria and take the east Loop around town as you come in on the north side, past Hwy 59, then pick up Hwy 185 and go south into Seadrift or Port O'Connor or make the right turn before Seadrift onto hwy 35 that takes you directly into Fulton and Rockport across the Copano Bridge. This is the way we'll come home in order to go to the butcher shop I was talking about east of LaGrange just below Round Top and Brenham, and then take hwy 36 north and pick up hwy 77 again just south of Cameron and before the turnoff back to Eddy and I-35. I figure less than an hour out of the way total ...but then I shop forever looking at all the goodies in the butcher shop too !!! LOL!!! But the San Marcos/Seguin/Karnes City route is over an hour shorter than the Hwy 77 route thru Victoria. Been both ways couple times and pulling a boat I will not go up or down the ridge south of La Grange ever again!!!! Haven't that one figured out yet with the boat...but the road up and down the ridge is super narrow and very steep especially pulling a boat that weighs as much as the truck and has no trailer brakes. NOT a fun idea. Ron

When you go the 123 route the hwy it T's into is 181 in karnes city. I like this route (grew up in Seguin) the towns you drive through break up the drive but none are big enough to have any stop lights.

With the forecast predicting 8' to 10' seas out of Port A, I think I will change my plans and hit Texoma instead. Probably will have 3' to 4' waves with the predicted wind for this weekend. The strong winds will make for some great drifts and keep the boat traffic down...... I hope!
