Planning on renting a house in the Sargent area in late May, which will be our first time in that area (we normally rent in Surfside or west end of Galveston Island). Looking for good pier fishing at the house- does anyone have a house they can recommend? Also plan on fishing the surf at Sargent Beach for specs - any advice there also appreciated.

Outtabeer - sorry to hear about the beach conditions on your trip. From my many experiences going to Galveston or Surfside I have found that the surf is in poor fishing condition at least half the time, which is why I want a good night fishing pier as a backup.

that was my first time to matagorda; the nice part was i was camped about three miles up the beach and right behind me was wilson's cut going behind the dunes; there are miles of roads back there; threw out my cast net and got plenty of bait then just threw my lines out and relaxed; caught a couple slot reds....really liked how it is undeveloped and lots of public lands to roam around

in sargent you can rent the houses at the end of ponotoc rd (i think its called) where the intracostal and caney creek intersect and are pretty good for fishing especially in the summer. Matagorda im pretty sure only has houses to rent either on the beach or on the river... if i was fishin i would try to get a house on the river and make the short drive to the beach (anywhere in matagorda is a short drive haha) if you wanted to fish in the surf. if there is a east wind like we had last weekend the beach will probably have at least of foot of seaweed all the way down with tide pools (believe me i saw it haha). Oh and if you rent a house on the beach and there is an east wind you would have to put up with the wonderful smell of that sea weed... NO BUENO

hope that gets you somewhere... but you cant beat the small fishing communities like sargent and matagorda... Matagorda is my home, and my house that i live at in houston is my home away from home
