This might be one way to beef up your Penn 9500 for tuna fishing. They are not designed like the stella but this might help. I have fished with this Caption a couple of times in Kona. He is a bottom fishing and jigging nut. 90% of his clients are from Japan. I caught 7 Ambejack with him one day. My arms were about to fall off. Big AJ's about 55 to 85 lbs. They throw them back in Hawaii because they are considered unsafe to eat because of the diet on the volucanic rock reefs. Here is the link to the 9500. http://fishinkona.com/jigging.htm

Very good...thanks for sharing it, mrbill. The double-crank idea is a little out of the box, but a very cool idea.

Just so everyone knows... I just finished the anti-reverse mod and there needs to be one other thing. That guy shows the new limit bar being fastened by the original bolt for that hole. THIS CANNOT WORK! more to the point, it defeats the purpose by using the original screw. the shoulders on the dog screws are larger due to the larger screw size. by using the existing bolt, the shoulders dont match up & the limit bar just floats around. the small screw hole has to be enlarged to 1/8" then tapped for 5-32 to accept the screw w/ the correct shoulder diameter for the dog. This is an awesome upgrade that cost me $2.00 in parts and took about an hour, including the boring/tapping. the difference can be felt immediately, & I'm much more confident of boating a 90#+ YFT w/ this reel -B

lite-liner,
I can't belive you already made the modification. Congrats to you. This guy Jeff Rogers was a hands on Captain and jack of all trades. I'm a billfish nut. He is a jigging nut. I fished with him for four days about 6 years ago. He had all the butterfly type jigs back then. His Japan clients always gave him a few. I laughed at him when showed me the jigs and dancing hooks attached at the top of the jig.
The whole time we were trolling for marlin, all he talked about was jigging. I finally gave in the third day and was in shock at the success. I'll never forget his favorite jigging spot was only two hundred yards offshore on a nude beach.
I think that is the only reason I let him take me back the 4th day for jigging only charter. I broke two of his rods trying to muscle in big AJs. It's funny how strong you get when your checking out the scenery on the beach.

DSG If we can get one of the 12 tooth A/R cogs as an example, We can get them made out of 321 Stainless fairly cheap at a Water Jet cutter shop. Bazz

Charlie sez there's a kit made from stainless w/ matching dogs floating around on some japanese website. another FYI: don't get the power handle, the knob is ridiculous. Thinking about adapting an Avet EX knob to the existing handle? -B

Japanese fishermen upgrade everything inside of Penn 9500SS and it cost a lot of money. http://www.gaar.co.jp/custom/custom.htm#for_penn I am visiting Kona with my family during Christmas Holiday. Jeff seems very popular with Japanese jig fishermen and I don't know I can get a date with him. But all I need is a captain who know where fish are. It seems there are many capable captains though they don't have much jigging experienes like Jeff. I am more interested in tuna jigging than AJ jigging in the big island.
