I was recently thumbing through my Bluebonnet Electric C0-Op news letter and saw a picture of a large alligator killed by a guy with archery equipment. The caption reads that it was killed on the Frio River near Tilden. My question is how is this legal and if so how does one go about getting in on that action.

Guess nobody knows? You might try this question at the hunting forum, somebody there might know the answer. Were they up the river still in Choke or in Tilden on the frio?

To my knowledge you may not shoot a free swimming gator. They must be attached to a hook and line before being shot. You DEFINETLY have to have a permit.

Check out the tx parks and wildlife website. Last time I looked at it I was surprised to see a 23 page pdf document detailing all the rules on gator hunting in texas. Click on regulations and it will be right there in the list.

They issue permits to landowners who have gators. They were hunting the frio off of a private ranch I believe. I saw that pic too, it was a big gator. Not sure about the have to be on a hook thing, but you need a permit.

From what I have read, there are seasons, core and non-core counties. The non-core counties don't require a special permit to take gators during the season, but once the gator is taken you have to apply for some sort of paperwork. Its all in the Outdoor Annual.

I saw that picture of that gator from the Frio it was on the internet back in 2009. I just don't think it was a gator. The color is just too light and the head just doesn't look right?? I think its a croc!
Not saying there isn't gators that big in the Frio cause I have seen some real monsters in Choke. I have seen on 3 different outings a gator that would be at least 13 feet long if not larger.

Not 100% sure of that Frio pic but that picture just may not be a good pic IDK??

Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit!! It is when pirates count their booty that they become mere thieves. ARRRRRR....
