I have them both (older Premium, 2010 Platinum). The Platinum adds a few bells and whistles. Would I spend the $50 again if given the chance? Yes. I like the satellite overlay feature and the occasional photograph of an area.

I have a screen shot of the satellite imaging I am talking about. Let me know if you want to see it.

This lake was up a few feet from normal and when the satellite image was taken. Depending on the lake the satellite imaging can be useful.

I have never tried an HDS-5, but can't think of a reason why not.

The Platinum will work in the 8-9-11 series of the Humminbird. The 798 will not support it at this time. Premium is recommended for the 3-5-7 series.
