Honesty among bass fishermen once was a thing of beauty. No mater the size of the tournament everyone was honest. Yes, the fishermans code is one thing, Early to bed, Early to rise, Fish like crazy and make up lies. It was always the One that got away. Besides the size of the fish, bass fishermen were as honest as the day is long. Someone you could depend on in the time of need and someone that was a true friend. For the MOST part, we are all still great people but it is the select few that gives us a bad wrap.

I only bring this up because of what happened last night. This is my soap box. A father and son fished the local working mans tournament yesterday. The son, about 20-25 years old, was running the trolling motor and the father was in the back. My partner and I started on one point and they started on another. As we got closer, about 30-40 yard away, the old man landed about a 2 pounder. We told him great catch and engaged in some small talk as we passed by. Now fast forward to the weigh in. It is an individual tournament. The son, weighs in two fish and the old man weighs in nothing. When confronted about the fish, the old man says I gut hooked the fish and it died in the live well, so I through it back. The TD left it at that and it is what it is. Now, the son was not in the money and his weigh did not affect the outcome of the payout.

Here is the second part. The TD does not do live well checks and he allows anyone that wants to drive to the dam to launch 10 min head start. No big deal, yes I would like for live wells to be checked. Weigh in is 8:30 pm. I always, along with most others, check in on time. Some come straggling in up to 8:50 pm and still weigh their fish. That is what I do not like. Now keep in mind the TD, is a great guy, partly why he allows some to come in late. He does not want confrontation and just enjoys putting on the tournaments.

After this LONG Soap Box, would you continue to fish the tournament? Would you ask for some changes to be made? What is your input?

I'm not a tourney fisherman, but I sure as heck wouldn't participate in any event where the TD is more concerned with being a "good guy" and avoiding a confrontation than holding all participants to the same rules.

I say bring up the issues before the next tournament, not after. If your still not satisfied, then don't enter.

in addition, is it not Illegal to throw a dead fish back in the lake?

i wouldnt fish thm anymore. i had a similar scenario play out with tournament I fished on ray hubbard a few years ago. it wasnt a local club, but one that had an open. it was amazing one guy in the boat had 5 good ones, and the other had nothing. I wont mention any names, but will not ever fish with them again. I did witness both guys catch fish up in the river.

Sounds like your problem really is with the TD. Apparently this is an individual tournament, so it is ripe for cheating. Working Man's tournaments in general are ripe for cheating, especially if there is a decent chunk of change as a reward.

bring it up in a meeting, or the pre-brief, or when ever there's a group to help with the decisions..and vote.

I agree with other comments here. I've got a feeling the TD is not gonna implement the adjustments you are hoping to see. It would benefit the overall process for you to be true to yourself. If that means you can't in good conscience fish this organization then it would also be appropriate to let them know why you are boycotting them as opposed to simply fading away. The TD will not do anything different if he is unaware of the issue or issues. If this is no big deal to you then just get over it and go fish. I think though that this is an issue for you and it would be for me also.

Thanks, guys! I am having a hard time convencing myself to fish it again. It is just a shame, I use to fish this tournament back in the 90's and it was full of great honest people.

Voice your concerns to the people that put on the tournament and discuss the actions of the TD. The results should tell u weather to continue to fish it or not.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I wondered the same thing. My son and I fished the Wednesday night at Waco. I have never fished it before. I'm not really a tournament fisherman. There had to be over forty boats entered. $25 apiece. That's a nice little payday. All you do is pay and takeoff at 5:30 be back at the weighin line by 8:30. No livewell checks or anything! How are you sure that some guys haven't been on the water all day? I'm not saying anyone is cheating, but it could happen. No oversight at all. I think they should do random checks or something. All this didn't matter as much when I got back and our spare was stolen! Lol

Not to get off the subjest, but is it legal to cull a dead fish? Say your smallest fish dies in the live well and then you catch a bigger fish later can you cull it or are you supposed to keep the dead and cull the live ones? I am asking because I wouldn't ever want to cheat and would like to know.
