they split the tip anyways. I am sure the captain would appreciate knowing there is an upfront amount showing we are serious. Money talks.

We're going to pay 10% either up front or at the end. Tend to agree with SKR, tipping up front with a "carrot" at the end seemed to work last year. Tip money is what the deckhands work for, captain too.

Don't want folks to misunderstand, sometimes fish just don't cooperate. If we're having problems finding fish and the captain is moving trying to find them, then INMHO, they're working hard to put us on fish. If we're just sitting, no fish present, my extra tip money stays in my pocket. Fish can be present but just plain not biting, to me that situation is different. I still expect the captain to try to put us on fish that will cooperate. Deckhand tipping for those that work hard, whether we’re catching fish or not may and probably should be tipped on an individual basis.

For your information, the Capt. does not get any of the tip. It is 100% for the deckhands and they split it equally. Your Fuel Sur --charge is with the company, not the capt. or the crew. I suggest you leave the sur-charge out of it and figure it toward your own trip cost. Capt. Frank will do everything possible to put on fish. The deck hands will do their best which will never be good enough for some individuals. There are a lot of things the Deck hands will be doing to make your trip a winner that you will never even see or realize. Budget $100 per person. If you can't afford that you probably can't afford the trip. But by all means, wait till the end. Its a tip for service performed and it will get in the right hands. Drshark

Drshrk,
you dont mean $100 per deck hand do you? If everyone feels we will get better performance out the crew by waiting till the end to give them the tip then so be it but there is no way I am giving out $100 per deck hand...

$100 per person is a $4000 tip, which is 25%. Used to be that a standard charter tip was 10%. I don't mind 15 to 20%, but 25% is a little excessive in my book, but it's up to each individual what they choose to tip. Let's not be bullying anyone or making stupid comments like "if you don't tip $100, you probably can't afford the trip."

Additionally, I just got off the phone with Captain Elliott's. The tip is for all people working the boat, captains included. I was told they all split the tip equally.

The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

TxGrisley, I said budget a $100. Not per Crew. That would cover you if you had the trip of a Lifetime. You can actually give what you desire. Decide it on your own. Tip on your own. I don't participate in Collective Tipping. It always seems to be too cheep to me. I like to leave more than is expected when I want to be welcomed back again. You don't get that if you just run in a pack. Doc

Look at this for some help on tipping the crew and captain. There is a standard on the west coast. West Coast Tipping
