What is your strategy? When you approach a lake, how do you determine your approach to catching big bass, panfish, etc? For sping time from sun up till sun down, and light fishing. What do you throw mornings? What do you go to when it warms up (texas yall)? How about when it cools back down? Do you know what bugs hatch at a particular time that bass/panfish are looking for? Colors murky or clear?

Got plenty of lures but dad gum fish just wont cooperate. Wannabe fisherman in training.

damn, thats a comprehensive list, you should probably read a fishing strategies book or read some magazines, I aint saying you wont get an answer here, but the answer to your question is one that a great many seek & for the most part the that answer can only be provided thru experience; ie; time on the water, go getcha some.

1. Log off the computer
2. Tie on a fly, cast
3. No bites, change location
4. Still no bites, refer to #2

your results may vary

for bass
i like to start with some go to flys that i know work. if it is the spring/summer time its going to be a popper. then after i go awhile with out a blow up ill switch, most likey a streamer patter of somekind

if it isnt spring or summer im going to go to a streamer or a large buggy looking nymph and slow my presentation down

take whats working for conventional guys and just throw the equivalent.

I most often take late afternoon short trips to places I fish all the time so I usually know what to use if I want to catch fish. More often now days I'm experimenting with a new fly so it's hard to say what I'll be using on any given trip. It's all in the fun of being outdoors and fishing..

Most of the time I have some new flies I've made up and want to see if they'll work, if they don't I go back to my box of ol' faithfuls and keep fishing. If you're trying to match the hatch I look at it like I used to trout fish... get dirty and walk around the brush by the banks to see whats around. Right now in east Tx hegalomight (I can't spell) style flies have been killing em in the later afternoon and poppers/dry in the morning. When that dies off I go to a wooly booger or a streamer style.

I'd say first, you should see what the fish are doing. Are they rising? Hitting top water stuff? If so, what are they eating? Try a popper/gurgler. Maybe if it's windy through stuff that might be blowing off the trees or banks ie willow grubs, hoppers, spiders, etc.

If nothing is happening on the surface, then most of the action is happening under the surface or just under the surface. A lot of time you can see schools of bait-fish running around and they might be hitting those. So throw something that imitates those like small clousers or other minnow patterns. Wooly buggers are always a good choice. If it's really muddy then white just off the bank is a good call if it's clearer then your darker colors tend to work better: black, autumn slpendors, greens, etc.
