Anyone ever been? My wife and I are heading there at the end of August, and I might have to try and squeeze in some fishing

Never been myself but a buddy at my office went over the Christmas Holiday. They got on a private charter boat for about $250 and they caught several big mahi and then had them cook it for him. Said it was the best fish he'd ever eaten. I'm jealous!!!

The sportfishing fleets in the Cozumel Marina and up at Isla del Muerta are where you want to be for anything bigger than a 20'+ panga. The channel between Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel are Sailfish heaven in the spring and early summer. Pull up the Cozumel web site and you might be able to pickup some info that way. There is a ferry that runs between Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen. Also be sure and spend some time at Xelha even if you don't snorkle or scuba. Well worth the trip down. The Telume trip was ok but in August might be a bear in the heat. Good food at Xelha and I wished that we had stayed a full day there. Take mucho mucho film to Xelha. Or checkout the new resort lots further down the coast that has an underground river swimming tour of several miles!!! cozumel has the best snorkle and scuba sites on the Mexican Riviera....and an "optional" beach on the Carribean side. Do a search on "Puerto Adventuras". This is a small resort community close to Playa. It has the only "marina" that I know of on the Riviera Maya. You can find many places like Akumal where you can fish for around $100 for two hours. There is little travel time to fish, maybe 5 minutes. The boats are small, but that was not a problem for my wife and I. If you need more info, just ask. www.akumal.com/fishing.html

Puerto Aventuras is about 45 minutes by car south of Cancun maybe 15 from Playa del Carmen. I took a couple of half day trips there last July and had two really good boat crews. We worked hard but it was a tough day fishing. Talked to several people about what to do and where to go and they all said that was the place.
You have a shot at sailfish literally right outside the harbor. Cancun is relatively shallow water and a long boat ride to get to better fishing.
Puerto Aventuras was relatively affordable and the crews new what they were doing.

Never fished there, but I did scuba at playa del carmen....it was amazing. Saw some huge fish, and the water clarity was around 200-300 ft.. If you get a chance try it.

We fished with this group http://www.captricksfishing.com/index.html 550 for a full day charter for me and my wife. 3 marlin raised, 1 91" sailfish landed(My wife's first salt water fish) 3 dorado to 39 lbs and lots of barracuda and small mackeral. If you want to do a charter I feel its best to go ahead and book the whole boat. Some of the charter companies charter several groups for one boat and everybody has to take turns. So if you don't mind paying book the whole boat. Also Capt Ricks group fishes out of Puerto Aventuras which is so close to deep water they lowered the outriggers as we left the jetties and the first marlin raised was within 300 yds of the jetties. No run time just fishing. Good luck Alan Jones

I fished right out of Playa Del Carmen... no need to drive out of town.. Here is who I went with on July 4th Week this year. http://www.prodigyweb.net.mx/grafs/ Here is the link to a couple of video clips of my fishing trip with him. http://www.surf-masters.com/msforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1570 He is an excellent Captain and knows his stuff. He is great for the kids too... Trolling or Bottom Fishing. You can take 3 half day trips with him for what it cost to take a larger boat for one half day trip. Deep water is only 1/4 mile from shore.. A big boat is not needed unless you want a bathroom. ------------------ Surf-Masters TexSafaris Extreme Outdoors [This message has been edited by whopperstopper (edited 07-07-2003).]
