 How do I change the water pump???

I have a mercury 500 50 hp 1970 and it needs a new water pump or impeller how do I go about doing this? Thanks in advance

I would but I can't afford to spend $175.. I am a college student.. I saw a good deal and the motor started great when I bought it last week but when my buddy and I went to run it, it started smoking and then I realized there was no water coming out the port holes.  The forward and reverse and everything works great on it.

Do a compression test before you spend money on parts... just to make sure you didnt hurt anything.
