I was taking fish out of the freezer and i couldnt decide on which kind. I thought about it and decided to cook a little of each to see what the family prefered. We had hybrid bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill. The blue gill won hands down. I have eaten crappie all of my life and considered it to be the best but now i have to admit that i have a new favorite. The bluegill had the least "fishy" taste while the catfish was the strongest. I guess i will have to target bluegill now and stock my freezer!

I agree. I never made it out to cally this weekend. My 7 year old woke up with strep throat. Cant wait to get back out to the wall and catch another mess of bluegill. Gotta stock up my freezer for my family and my patients.

So I would think that having a "fishy" taste would be a good part of the reason to cook and eat fish in the first place...?

A little fishy yes, but not a strong fish taste. After eating the bluegill some of the cats tasted almost "weird". Besides i can always catch a mess of bluegill.

I remember catching a mess of bluegill with an uncle when I was a kid. Used crickets on a slip float if I remember right. How do you guys catch them?

Worms on a very small hook fishing straight down at calaveras. They have a very healthy population of blue gill.

Worms work great and I also use little pieces of cut shad. The big ones seem to like that on Calaveras. A good point about the small hooks, I use number 6 or 8 aberdeens. Also, I like to use small(1/32 oz.) jigs and flies.

I found a pack of hooks in an old tackle box i bought at a garage sale. The hooks are very small but they have about a 2 inch long neck and they are excellent for getting them back out of a small mouth. I gotta try to find some more because i am getting low!

Hell yes. I guess you found the same type of hook. Where did you buy them? I need to pick up a few packs.

I've fished at calaveras before but never caught a blue gill. What do they look like?

fishinnurse - I got them at academy. They have them in size 6,8, and 10. They sometimes get scattered around the hook section so you may have to look around. The bluegill there look like this or this

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Never had blue gill when I was younger I thought you couldn't eat them so I guess it stuck.
