Haven't speared a wave yet but as much as I fish I'm sure its going to happen. Thats the one thing with fishing I don't care for is the nasty wind.

How do you spear a wave? I'm guessing you are going very very slow over them and the timing just isn't right?

Several things can happen, on falcon we were on top running fine and the ground swell was further than the set, so when we came off the set we dropped into the trough which picked the back end up and the prop lost its bite, just dove right off and thru the swell wave

Do ya'll turn over big bass boats? Are ya'll doing your best to cross cut the wave action? I have been fishing for about 12 years. Never turned over a boat or speared a wave. Try to trim with the nose up a bit as not to go thru the waves, try to stay on top. Have been in some rather unfriendly water(scared to death).

It can also happen when your in a boat that happens to be shorter than the distance from swell to swell and the trough in between is deep enough. I came real close to spearing a few coming across the main lake on Choke Canyon last month, winds were gusting to 40, good thing I was in a 21ft boat!

You should continue to show the wisdom to stay off a large impoundment when the waves are stupid big. Your wisdom not your great capabilities is why you have not "speared a wave". LOL

I did not think it could happen to me either but did it last year on tawakoni. The wind was blowing 26-32 out of the east, it was 8-10 when we started the tourny. We were doing fine and staying on top, then the waves got to far apart and deep. We speared one, got a little wet and laughed. Before I stopped laughing we hit another one. It really felt like we went through the wave. It seriously pushed me back in my seat with alot of force. Then I looked down and the whole boat was full of water. I turnded the bilge on and had to keep going. When your boat gets that full it will not get on plane or go fast. This experience made me alot mor cautious and think more than I did. Overall it was a very scary event for me.

Can you guys elaborate what exactly is happening when "spearing a wave"? You spear a wave when the bow of your boat goes up a wave and then gets stuck in the through of the next wave. IT WILL SOAK YA.

Its kinda like standing on the bridge of the that ride at Six Flags with the big boat that goes up and plunges down real fast creating a massive wall of water, I forget the name of it but thats what it is like, and not near as fun.

Speared one on Lewisville last year, water temp wasn't exactly cold or warm but more on the chilly side.

The waves are so big you can't straddle the trough without poking the bow of your boat into the peak of the next wave. The result is a shower of water directly onto your boat. The water can hit you like a firehose with a lot of force.
