I've done almost as well on a brown BH bugger on a size 4 hook than any other craw pattern. I also like copper and dark red Clousers.

This is not my picture and I didnt develop this fly, but this is what I base my patterns off of. I skip the clouser eyes and use lead wire instead, wrapped at the eye of the hook. I use swiss straw on top and to make the tail fin.

Foam claws with a weight at the hook eye cause the fly to sink to the bottom and stand up vertically in the water to imitate an angry bug. This also keeps the hook from fouling on the bottom.

It's more than the catfish would do.

Never fished a crawdad fly but here is one I tied. My small mouth fishing has been restricted to Lake Texoma so not an expert, but over the years have caught dozens of them to 6+ lbs while targeting striped bass. I caught them most times along channel drop offs chasing shad right in the midst of striper action. Favorite fly was my Spinster with a chartreuse blade.
