The fishing has been great on Big Sam. The low water has actually helped concentrate the fish and made them easier to locate. Usually, the fish have hundreds of acres of buckbrush and timber to hide in during the spring. This year that’s certainly not the case. The lake is currently 8 feet below pool which is actually more than 10 feet below normal spring levels. Any cover in the water seems to be holding fish. Pepper grass beds, coontail and hydrilla are all good places for the fish to set up as they move to and from spawning areas. Best baits have been just about anything you want to throw. Spinnerbaits and chatterbaits worked shallow early and late have been producing well. Split shots and light Carolina rigs have been the most productive day in and day out. Hang a Dinero worm, Super Fluke, or Lizard in any shade of watermelon and you’ll get bit. I’ve also been hammering them on swimbaits. The best for me has been the Cane Thumper by Big Bite. Skinny Dippers and Swimmin’ Flukes are good too. Watermelon shades and Houdini are solid color choices. I’ve had very good luck on these swimbaits using the new Owner Beast hook in 4/0 with an eighth ounce belly weight. Not near as many missed fish due to the increased gap in this style hook. Out in the deep water the postspawn fish have started to stack up on ridges in 15-25 feet. Shakey heads, Carolina rigs and drop shots will all work. The same baits are working on the deep pattern. Crappie catches have been very consistent. Big Bite Slab Tubes in white/chartreuse and black/chartreuse rigged behind a small jig are producing lots of slabs. Set the Hook Hard.
