I've been hitting the river pretty regular lately, but have been lazy about posting reports. So I thought I would lump some into one to get caught up.


3-11-11
Did an overnighter with a buddy that has been fishing for a long time but is just getting into kayaking. Fishing on the trip was pretty good with him shining on numbers and quality. I think he's officially hooked.

Did a solo overnighter on one of my favorite stretches. Took Dixie out for the first camp of the year. She's an old pro at it by now. Decent fishing and good grub were in store.

Not much to report on this one. Fishing was good as long as you wanted high numbers of small buck bass. None really photo worthy. Took an afternoon nap after losing not one, but two 6-7 pounders. Then picked up a decent channel cat on the way back.


A hammock is essential day trip dry bag gear. Helped me get over being snake-bit on my big fish.


He's lucky I wasn't fish-hungry.

This was a cool trip. The girlfriend and I decided to take her son, Garrett, on his first kayak fishing trip. He'd been on others, but this time he would have his own boat. He's eleven, so we wondered how he would handle it. It turned out to be a hit.

So, a solo overnighter, huh? That sounds incredibly interesting. Care to elaborate on that experience a little? Upon reading Goodbye To A River, I have had a creeping interest in doing a 1 or 2 night solo paddle. Any advice? Pros and cons?

I don't consider myself to be an Upper Brazos expert by any means, but I am slowly building my relationship with it, so to speak.

Lots of good fun there. Some real decent fish too.

What area of the Brazo's did you put in at? I was researching doing about 4 miles of the possum kingdom damn area and paddling back the same day.

It's always good to keep a hatchet within reach while kayaking

Like the other poster said, you should contact Shane Davies about lining up a trip. He has forgot more about the Brazos than I'll ever know. He posts on here quite a bit and goes by the handle of "Yaknyota". He's a first class fisherman, guide, and friend. He'll hook you up with whatever kind of trip you want to do.

Not sure, but he was a lucky one. He got to live. I'm one of those people who can handle any kind of snake, but will squeal like a girl If I get a spider on me.
