Packbaits change the main ingredient per the water temp change. You don't fish grits in the winter for one thing. Once you understand how water temps affect carp and the bait to draw them in you will catch year round. I change my packbait to suit the water conditions, not just cuz it is the only recipe I know. Once you start mixing grits, oats, bread it becomes a ground bait cuz you are mixing diff ingredients and not sticking with a single main ingredient. What kind of grits are you using as a breaker? Why do you even need a breaker with oats? You don't. If you are using instant grits and instant oats then you have two binders. Instant oats will bind for hours if packed hard enough. When using oats you have to use old fashion oats and they act as a binder and breaker and not the 1 minute stuff

oats grits cream corn chili powder
bread crumbs
if it is not packed enough, add bread crumbs. I have used this on LBL and did well.
i usually use about a 3rd of the oats, a 3rd of the grits, one can of cream corn and dust it with chili powder until it turns a little bit of a brown reddish color.
the chili powder is optional, but seems to work well if made right you wont need bread crumbs or grits ted, the old fashion oats are the binder and breaker. And depending on what kind of grits you have you might be adding 3 binders and no breakers

if you use just Old fashioned oats and cream corn you just have a binder and a wetter, this will not break down well unless you add some quick gritts to help break it down, I do not use this anymore just for the fact that you have to change ratios due to water temps, I use a method that contains 3 different pellets along with a small amount of old fashioned oats, and bread crumbs and lake water as the wetter.

Thanks Scott. I admit, I have a ton to learn and this thread is helping me.
I think maybe i was adding too much cream corn for the amount of oats in there.

he asked for packbait, that is what I gave him. I tried to give you guys a lesson on the differences but some people are too stubborn to just listen.
