I'm leaving Friday to go to Padre for a week with the wife and kids. I have a 22' Kenner and want to go offshore with my 9 & 11 year old boys one day.

From what I've been reading, there aren't many rigs in this area. I have a GPS so I'd like to find some wrecks/rocks or structure without running to far. I'd like any advice (bait, trolling, drifting, spots, etc...) from somebody who has fished offshore in this area.

Thanks!

Do you mean the Island off corpus or the one further south. If you are talking about corpus then there are plenty of rigs dotting the entire coast. I regularly take a small zodiac out to one through the surf. It has a 4.5 horse motor and only takes me 20 minutes on a calm day. This rig is about a mile or 2 off Bob Hall Pier and I heard that it is the closest place to catch snapper anywhere in Texas. Good Luck.

I mean South Padre or Port Isabel.

There is also long jetties in port isabel. i have heard recent talks of kingfish, snook, shark, being caught. Fishing the jettie by boat will give you good positioning and is not very far from shore. The jetty also extends a good way into the Gulf, so there is no telling what you may catch. I am more of a bay fisherman but I'll ask around and get back to you. Hope the hurricane doesn't blow P.I. away

Whitey, I'd stick close to the weather report for the time being, there is no doubt that SPI will be affected by Hurricane Emily in some way.
