Hey guys I have some of the old shimano curado 100b's sitting around not getting used. They have diffently seen better days (sound pretty rough). Im considering rebuilding them.
Can anyone tell me what all i need to get? How much it will cost? Where to get the parts?
Thanks

Excellent Reels. That is a comparable to a $200.00 reel today.
It depends on what exactly is wrong with it. Parts could range from a new set of bearings (Two spool bearings, pinion bearing, and base crank bearings for around $38.00 in Hybrid Ceramic ABEC5s) to a complete rebuild parts list at $50.80 plus the bearings above. That would replace the Anti Reverse bearing, the inner race for the main AR bearing, both Idle gears, the Drive gear, the brake weights, the level wind assembly complete with pawl, the pinion gear and the Clutch pawl. This would in effect make a brand new reel. But all that may not be necessary to get better than new performance but if you want it done, The total package including labor and a new set of Carbontex drags would be $99.00 including cleaning of the remaining parts, tuning, testing and reassembly. This would make that reel compare to any $200.00 reel on the market. If the reels are cosmetically good (7+) then the expenditure makes real sense and is definitely worth it as an alternative to buying new reels.

Thanks for the detailed reply. The reels have kind of been neglected. The major problem is there is a noise and a slight grind when it is reeled. It doesnt cast as good as it ought to either. What are some of the common parts that normally need replaced and what the difficulty level of taking the reels apart and repairing them? Thanks

With the grind during reeling it can be cause by
1. Bad or dirty gears-Replace or Clean 2. Bad or dirty Anti Reverse Bearing-Replace or Clean 3. Bad or dirty main crankshaft bearing-Replace or clean 4. Bad or dirty Worm gear
I am betting that the gear set is bad
The casting part is caused mainly by the bearings although a worn clutch assembly can also effect the cast due to the release of the pinon gear on the spool.
Spool Bearing replacement is easy. A complete rebuild will depend on your patience, aptitude and abilities.
Or it can cost you 20 bucks for the labor to let me do it for you. That is included in the price above. My labor rate is a little cheaper on the rebuild due to the fact I just have to rip open a pack prep the parts and install it and not clean it.

also one thing to look for on the Curado B's is warped drag washers. They can also cause the reel to be rough, and can be a non-obvious cause of the problem.
This problem was exaccerbated if you left the reels with the drags tight in the heat for any period of time.

Yep, you can save about 15 bucks on the total package for each reel. That is if you can find the correct parts, and are fairly handy with detail and can buy all the parts at wholesale prices and do not pay shipping charges. That is an excellent link for basic routine maintenance. Everyone should study them and be familiar with the routine. Unfortunately Shimano nor does any factory go to this detail when taking down a reel for absolute service and repair. They hit the high spots and fix the ailing part but do not go to this length. I have been there and see what they do as part of my training. Why the 15 bucks saved instead of the discounted 20 bucks in the package? I charge 5 bucks extra for reels sent to me in body bags.

Looks like you could handle watch repair if you were so inclined. I have a bad habit of leftover parts.Ooops. Dang where was that supposed to go?

Nothing like making your day when opening boxes to find a bag full of parts.
Thank you, Shawn Smith

I would think I could service one faster as just a bag of parts rather than having to dissemble it myself...especially if it's a common reel like an Ambassadeur or Curado B...

The problem is sorting out all the parts and taking to time to inventory them to make sure they are all there. In most instances like this they aren't. And they are not all Curado B's nor Ambassadors. Try putting a Tiagra 80 Wide Two Speed back together out of a bag or a Penn 309. You would be surprised how many folks save the money to do it themselves and then realialize that worm gear is going to cost them 10 bucks to get there or on a Simple C3 Garcia and they cannot figure out why the spool spins so good when they before they put it in and then there is no freespool or there is too much. I know why, do they?

CTS is the man when it comes to servicing and will give you the best advice, and will even tell you if it is worth sending to him or another reel repair serviceman. I can tell you that if no one local can locate parts for what I need he will be my go-to guy. Hell he even got me to switch from Revo to Shimano without ever meeting him. (By the way guys I hated Shimanos before seeing some of his posts about parts availability, and I use mostly Daiwas.)
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

Why don't they make the 100B anymore? The 200 feels too big to me and the 50's nice but I want more gear ratios than it offers.

I am just glad that I was wearing short and those faggy Crocks when I came in so as to wade without messing up my good shoes. Thanks, LOL!
