Recently read an article about how barometric pressure can turn on or off the fish bite. Does anyone know how cats are effected by this? And also if I have a Barometer at my house, how close will it read if the lakes I fish are 20+miles away? I already watch the moon phase and water temp etc. The opinion in what I read was that barometric pressure has more effect than the other things.

I read on here a while back and the guys that chart the barometric pressure say that a steady pressure is when the fish bite best. I think They said too that a rapid rise or fall in the barometer will shut them off. Being only 20 miles from the lake I bet it is gonna be real similar. I don't keep up with that but someone who knows about This will chime in Shorty I bet.

I forget who, but the other day someone was charting & keeping records on pressure readings & they took note that when it stayed steady for long periods, say a few hours or more, the fish were biting real good.
As for most rod-n-reelers, I am sure when a storm comes in, most get off the lake and/or river. So what the results would be, would not be known.
The pressure usually falls when a storm comes in. As for set lines, be it trotlines, throwlines, a juglines, since they stay out in the storm & "weather" it out, the results on my end showed they chomped down heavy, because most of the time the haul just after it is a lot better (meaning more caught). Be it a qwik summer thundershower with or without lightning, or one that hits in November or December.

Pressure changes usually accompany fronts and demo and wind changes.

I think the guy with the "Catfish Battleship" was charting pressure changes vs fishing success. I forget his name though. He's from the San Antonio area.

A steady barometer is the best fishin I believe but rising or falling won't keep me off the water +1 I think of my Great Grand Dad. He went fishing. If it was cold he got a coat. Raining he got a slicker. Windy he tied his hat down. Etc Etc.

We did a little filming on the lake today. The bite was really good up until 1:30 or so. After that the fish really shut off. Then the wind changed directions slightly. Now looking back at the data on the bp, it shows how steady it was before dropping. Notice the wind direction change as well. Still managed to catch close to 50 fish before heading back to the dock.

I combed my massive email system (thank goodness it has a similar setup like a search engine). It is the ancient dinosaur- Eudora 1.4.4 (designed originally for the military, if I recall correctly). I liked the massive filing system you can do with it.
It was Woodpecker who posted the info & what he was using (it recorded it for review), as well as another's comment on another route. Here are my "snipped" notes/quotes---
========================= Jim aka Woodpecker noted on 2-20-11 on TFF: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ It is the Davis Vantage VUE console. I got it from scientificsales.com. They were a lot less than some others that carry it and their shipping was excellent. I actually talked with a rep in California at the plant where they are made. Something actually made in America. It is wireless so I take the console into the house and it works 24/7. It is a complete weather system. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
85Phantom shares 2-22-11: +++++++++++ I would like to pass on my tip. Not sophisticated but I like the way this little application works. For those of you with smart phones iPhone, Android or Windows. I have the Droid so I went to the android market and downloaded the application "EWeather HD" by Elecont it has a Barameter and weather clock. All relevent weather information for your current location based on a manual city setting or current GPS location is downloaded to your phone and displayed in the application. You can choose several weather update intervals and options, you can pick whats best for you more or less you decide. I really like it and I hope you too. I found this to be very usefull for any outdoorsman or women. the website does not show all options but trust me there is a Barameter pressure graph that tracks changes and you can see if barameter pressure is holding steady, falling or rising. Hope this tip helps out. +++++++++++

I thought I had snipped the info on what he & others noted, but I recall it was lenghty periods of steady pressure that was producing well on cats for them as to Rod-n-Reel. Of course, usually one retreats in the case of being out on the lake as a storm comes in & during it. This is where running set lines can give you feedback as to biting during the storm (just before, during & slightly afterward) as to results for that period of intense pressure.
You would have to comb back in the archives search engine about that date & subject to find the thread.

Used to be that I would not leave the house if the barometer was not above 30.00 on the scale and would stay home if was falling rapidly. But on the other hand if it was rising pretty good, that would get me in the car faster than a jack rabbit could.
Not to change the subject, but do yellow cat move more during a thunderstorm with lots of lightning?
