Went to a pond by my house before church. Wouldve done pretty well. I switched to six pound line because i ran out of ten and i tied on a new zara spook just to try it out and practice for summer. Not even ten casts in one takes it. I wait the second before i go back hard for a hook set and snap. I was mad cuz brand new lure but it wasnt a huge fish i lost so i was kinda bumbed. Tied on a popper three casts and another one takes it, same thing happens only this time the lure floats up so i get it back. I tie on a fluke. Because i dont wanna loose anything else expensive and get another hit but i dont go back hard because i dont want another line break. That wouldve been a great hour for that pond if i had on ten lb line heres my questions.
Did the 6lb line help me get bits because of the smaller diameter?
Has anybody else had this problem with six lb line? I assure you none of the fish were six lbs.
And what kind of rod do you use to work a zara spook? I was using medium and it wasnt giving me the desired action. Thanks

Heavier line probably wouldn't have made a differiance on topwaters -- 10 or 12 would have been fine. There's a lot of torque when you set the hook and heavier line is a good idea as you found out.

What JPost said, sounds like they were feeding, get some bigger line and catch those HAWGS.

or your knot was cutting into the line and it was breaking at the knot

Are you saying that the fish see the line?

I don't think they care as much about the line as the what the spook is doing.

Whatever your line size, you should match your rod action and reel drag. I use six pound line a lot and don't have many issues. The lighter the line the more delicate you need to be when you tie the knot, moisten and go slow as not to burn the line.
In your situation (top-waters), I would just go with bigger line as said by others. The bigger mono will help you get more out of you baits because it floats better.

Bass fishing is like a 30,000 acre golf course with no flags and five holes you can't see- Tim

I use 14lb mono on my topwater rigs usually. . .I dont think it hurts my bite.

i use 17 lb for topwaters...larger diameter mono= more bouyant. also it gives me the confidence to horse the fish a little more because with topwaters...rarely do they take all 6 hooks and if theres a brushpile or laydown or even thick enough grass...we all know how that goes.

I use 50-65 lb braid for top waters. Most fish do not see the line so when you are fishing a top water fish do not see the line as well as they see the lure and its action. But I mainly fish heavy structure. I throw poppers, frogs, and buzzbaits around lily pads and heavy vegetation. Try switching your line up to at least 20-30lb braid. It will make a difference on hook sets and landed fish.

Never, ever use #6 line with a Zara Spook! That's kinda like pairing whiskey with milk. You need shock strength to set the hook with a top water bait. Don't go lighter than #14 IMHO.
