Literally from another perspective.

I've been critical of 61st because it's been my opinion that it's way too short.

Today we were checking out Galveston Fishing Pier (GFP) and I've always been happy that the pier went way out into the Gulf. I can hardly wait for the opening, but I've read on their Facebook page that only a partial part of the pier will be open and I'm guessing that they will open further parts of the pier when construction is finished.

However as I was looking at GFP I was also looking at 61st. I was at a place on Seawall where I can see both of them. It occurred to me that maybe 61st went out further than I thought. 61st really starts at the end of the rock groins, while GFP doesn't start at the groins, it starts just past Seawall.

Maybe I was too hasty in my judgment.

Do any of you long term fishermen know how much further GFP goes out in the Gulf as compared to 61st, pre Ike of course.

I'm always catch and release, except for cut bait.

Next to Bob Hall GFP was the longest pier in Texas if im not mistaken. I wouldnt let the length of the pier keep you from fishing it. Big fish arent always far out. Ive seen many big sharks caught from that pier as well as the old Flagship and countless numbers of bull reds, drum, kingfish, ling, and all kinda other "deep water" fish. Ive caught my fair share over the years as well. Trout, drum, reds, sheepheads, and most other stuff is gonna be caught around the front of the pier close to the rock groins anyway. I guess in this case, size doesnt matter. lol

imho, they should of just rebuild slp, much better of location then both 61 and gfp, as for size, those 2 go out about the the same distance, but it doesn't really matter how far out it goes, unless it goes 5 plus miles to the ocean, most the fish will be hugging in the first 2 sandbars most the time

I agree on them rebuilding SLP but it wont happen. Was a prime spot for a pier. The state was trying to get the pier from them long before Ike tore it down because of beach erosion and all Ike did was finish off the states work. If im not mistaken, that land where the pier was is now owned by the state.

the SAME fish can be and or caught on both Galveston Fishing Pier and 61st Pier . Both are / were / will be great piers . I prefer one over the other because of personal and physical reasons not because of the fishing . Everthing I have ever caught I caught at both piers .

Gawd I hope I catch a fish so big I will not have to lie again >>>> smile My phone # 713 517 9096
