I don't really set the hook. Just try to keep a good amount of pressure on the fish sweeping to whatever side will bring the fish in best. If they've only got one treble in them and decide to get airborne, you are gunna lose some fish. That being said, wide gap trebles have a far higher percentage of keeping fish buttoned up than standard ones (particularly on lipless cranks).

Do you set the hook on a rat-l-trap style bait? If not, you lose a bunch of fish. At least SWEEPO the rod to one side or antoher, as South TX Legend and dynatrakkid have mentioned. If you do not, you will lose more fish. If you are afraid of yuanking the hook out, get a glass rod or back off on your drag.

But YES, SET THE HOOK!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps.

Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I just lean back and reel a little faster. I normally upgrade to good hooks, so they are sharp enough to set themselves.

It's all about experience. not one fish strike is the same. They dont all just jump all over it in a traditional sense. A fish may knock a foot of slack in your line. In this case you alomst have to set the hook like a worm. Sometimes they hit it at the boat in which a hook set is almost a human reaction. When they just load up on it then no hook set is really required just lean into them and keep that tip down. when they just stop it or hammer the bait then a nice sweeping action and constant pressure will get the job done. There is no one rule from strike to hookup to landing a fish. Do what come natural. 75% of it is your setup anyway. from line to knot to rod(glass tip is best) to hooks (owner wide bend or mustad triplegrips are great).

Make sure you have quality hooks. We usually like a moderate hookset. Sweeping for shallow running baits and hard for deeper diving baits.

If I'm using a bait that had two treble hooks on it I'll just lean back and apply pressure to the fish. I have found you don't usually need to set a hook really heard with double trebles and sometimes if you do you will rip the hooks out of the fish before you get a good hookset. Treble hooks are meant to do the setting for you and good firm pressure, no a swift jerk, will allow those trebles to bury up good.
