Not into the whole record thing myself but this looks like an easy one to break.

Want an easier one?? There's no Largemouth Bass or Spotted bass records submitted yet. I've just never really liked turning in records, not sure why.

Do the C&R records. Much easier to submit.

I agree PB. IMHO, lake records are more for the angler's ego. Going out to collect a bunch of lake records for fly fishing is just below being an egg and woolly bugger fisherman.

I've broken numerous waterbody records with a fly; fish long enough and it's gonna happen. Did somebody else catch one bigger than mine? Maybe, but who cares.

On the flip side, if it's a state fly or all tackle fish, then heck yeah, it would be submitted, IF I can keep the fish alive. I've seen a state record spotted bass caught on fly. I guided the kid that caught it, but since we didn't have a way to keep the fish alive and the spot is a closely guareded secret, she still swims.

You broke the ~15# buffalo on Lewisville I put up in 2004? Or the 11.5# carp on Grapevine? You should file it! Of course the state record buffalo on fly is 59 pounds. That will probably stay in the record books for decades.

I got talked into doing those records as a method for decorating my fly tying area so I did them. Both fish release alive.

My 2# tippet IGFA record for Buffalo was released alive too.

The only record fish I killed was the TX state Barracuda at 26 pounds. I was assured by my guide that the damn thing would be dead within minutes of putting it back in the water by the other barracuda eating it.

It may be ego but it's fun. Especially when you get to tell your little brother who looks up to you that you got a world record. Or your mom laugh

Records are made to be broken. Most of us that are serious about fishing have broken a lot of them. Here are a few I should have turned in but didn't (all fly fishing):

3.5# white bass - TX State
7# spotted gar - TX State
8.5# alligator gar - TX State (tiny a-gar but bigger than the record)
longnose gar - I've broken this TX state record so many times I'm surprised I've never filed it, from fish @ 12-20 pounds.
20# smallmouth buffalo - IGFA 12# world record (actually have caught this twice)

The water body records exist purely because there are only so many record classes to go around, it means if someone wants to have a good go at a record they have a chance. Since most of them are vacant, it's really easy, but I imagine there is a little local competition on some.

Now I wish I would have turned in those records above. Why? Because it's fun, and because the chances of me catching another 3.5# white bass in my lifetime are fairly slim. Especially since I don't really like white bass fishing anymore!

I checked the Bob Sandlin records and it's like Grapevine, some fish not even recorded on the fly. Never really pursused it or cared much about it, I guess.

Doesn't there have to be a "certified scale" around? More importantly, I wouldn't want to kill a fish I wasn't going to eat. Not really sure how it all works.

I break the LMB fly rod record on LBL every year. I would love to make ma proud but the state still wants a witness even for a catch and release record, and most the time its just me and the camera. I know that I did it though, and I am sure others have too.

It's more than the catfish would do.
