Every year I wonder why so many people get so fired up about fishing right during the spawn...

Is it because fish are finally shallow enough for people that only fish shallow can catch them?

Ive been getting questions for a week or two now at the lake about beds and I get a funny look when I say I havent really been looking for any. I would much rather be fishing prespawn and postspawn fish.

Whats the big deal about fishing the spawn?????? fish

I would think most weekenders are not able to find and fish off shore structure. Heck I know some guides that are not even that good at fishing off shore structure.
The spawn is the best time of the year for these type I suppose.
I personally have a ball bed fishing. It happens for a short time and then you go back to your old routine. It is neat as he77 to me to watch the bass on the bed getting mad and getting madder and then nialating the bait. I won't go as far as saying it is the best time of year for me personally but I do enjoy the he77 out of it.

I was watching the footage this weekend from the B.A.S.S. tournament in Florida, and Shaw Grigsby was sight fishing for bedding bass. It seemed like he was having a really great time with it-actually watching the fish take the bait.

And yes, for guys like me who were taught to bass fish by beating the banks, it's the one time of year that we have a chance to catch good size fish.

I agree JR I never fish for bedding fish on purpose and sort of suffer this time of the year because I like to structure fish and a lot of fish are at the banks. I'll be glad when the spawn is over.

Retirement best job ever.

I'd love to be able to, it's something that just can't be done the rest of the year. Hunt, spot, work them and see the whole action. It's something new, pretty exciting. Unfortunately I haven't found any on my little lake!

They can be pretty aggressive! I was drop-shotting one time, years ago, I got a definite hit on one cast. So I went right back to the same spot, well dang, another hit..no hookup. Then a THIRD and a FORTH! Well hell, what is the deal....put a hook on my drop-shot weight and caught it, it was passing through someone's bed hooked

I hate the spawn. Give me offshore structure anyday.

I love the spawn and so do most of my customers. It becomes personal and makes it very challenging. Plus nothing like SEEING a giant on a bed

well if most of us that are not guides could spend all day every day on one single lake that is well known for the amount of giant fish that ivie is than i imagine we would not get so worked up about the spawn. The fact is this is the time of year when most people catch the biggest fish of their lives. When i think spawn i dont think of bedding fish but all the big fish that live out on main lake structure that are moving up more shallow and closer to the banks than any other time of year. this is the best time of year to catch a big fish, tournament results are proof

I used to sight fish a lot, but now I just enjoy fishing during the spawn. Fish are finally up and feeding! Winter last too long up here!!

So during the spawn JR you do not fish shallow? You look for the fish that either have spawned already and moved out or the fish that are waiting?

If you fishing Fork, then this may be your only chance at shallow fish this year.

No grass, you better start learning to structure fish. Where the heck else are they going to go?
