I've got a pretty basic set of waders (ie -cheap) that I used last year. Been thinking about investing in a better pair.
What are you guys wearing? Got any suggestions?

I use a neoprene pair I got at Academy for colder weather, chest waders with Boot attached, they work real well. I also got a pair of breathable ones I picked up at an Orvis store that was going out of business, fortunately they were 75% off, that store is outrageous, but the waders are quality material, and comfortable on hot summer days, and also have the boots attached. Just started using waders a couple summers ago, nothing like being dry after a full day of wading. Just don't drink too much coffee on the way to fish

I just bought a pair of waders from Bass Pro for $59. What I liked about the pair is that they had sizes for my short and stout frame. I am 5'9" and 250#s and am hard to fit. They are redhead waders and they are also warm. Here is a link http://www.basspro-shops.com/servlet/cat...arTarget=browse

I've been wearing the same pair of Wardell neoprene waders since 1991, with pretty hard use. Prior to that, I was buying a pair of rubber waders every second year. I don't even now if Wardell is still in business, but they're awesome. I probably don't need to say this, but go with stocking foot and wading boots, not with the models where the boots are attached.

Oh, yeah, I think they're 7 mm. I bought them for flyfishing in the Bow River in Calgary...cold mountain water. These babies are super warm. Plenty good for bayfishing this time of year.

Walleye, I have heard different stories about whether to go with or without boots attached. I heard that sometimes the area where the boots attach tend to wear and the they are gone. On the flip side, do you have to get a size or two bigger in the wading boots?
Last year I wore waders from February into early May. After that I was khakis panta or shorts and wading boots.
Thanks for the help
Scottie
PS - how thick should we have waders here in south texas?

Scottie,
Yes, they wear and rubber ones eventually crack where the boots connect to the waders. Your wading boots need to be one size larger than normal.

Scottie, 3 mils are good enough for 98% of the fishing you'll do. If the water's colder than what 3's will handle, it's too cold to fish!.......I'd go to Academy or Oshmans, try on some with boots and some with stocking feet. Try different types, and them look through BPS or Cabelas for a better price. I wore my brothers last april while wading Baffin, he's a little bigger(fatter) and taller than me, so the boots hurt at the ankle when the H2O pressure squeezed me. A better fit will allow you fish longer. I f you try to guess through BPS, your $70 waders might cost $100 by the time you return 3 or 4 pairs. ....BPS has their Redhead brand and Hodgeman is good from what I've worn, which is limited. I might break down and buy a pair myself......Walleye good to hear from you, you are welcome anytime I fish....7mm huh? Texas Toast

TOO and Scottie,
7 mm is definitely overkill for Texas- I've been pretty warm in March on the bays. The good thing is that these babies are super tough due to their thickness. I bought a wee pair of Redheads from BPS for my 7 year old son. They're 3 mm and are plenty for bayfishing.
ps- cutest little waders you've ever seen.

I would advise going with stocking foot waders if you are going to fish anywhere around oyster reefs. If you get the boot attached, and the oysters cut the boots, it's all over for that pair of waders. If you have stocking foot and oysters cut your wading boots, at most new pair of boots, but even then, it really doesn't matter. That's my 2 cents.

What do y'all think about these I found on BPS on sale - http://www.basspro-shops.com/servlet/cat...arTarget=browse Looks like it may fit the choice. The only problem is looking at wading boats on BPS they only go to size 12 and I would need a 13....hum. Scottie

Those look good, but as TOO stated, you might be sending them back several times to get a pair that fits. ------------------ Outdoor Directory and Resources

Go with stocking foot. The boots will squeeze your leg with the water pressure and cause discomfort and chaffing. Get the breathables, soooo much more comfortable. When its real cold wear more under them, and in April and early May you won't be sweating through your clothes like the neoprene guys.
P.S. Watch for Oshmans to have a sale in the next month or so. They had breatables and boots on sale last year at this time for $89.

Thanks for all the input. Especially on the breathables. I was wondering about them. I can always wear a little more underneath. However, I hate having to peel the damn things off on a milder day after wading alot.
Scottie
PS - which breathable ones do you suggest?
