I was wondering if anyone has ever had any luck with minnow traps? I am referring to the long circular ones that you see for sale at any bait shop, academy etc. We have had plenty of luck with homemade perch traps in Galveston and ponds etc. However, I have never ever seen anyone with a minnow caught in a trap. We have just recently (this week) started fishing Eagle Mountain, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a trap that would work for minnows. We have a slip at Lake Country, and it would be great to have some minnows in the trap when we get there. Any tips, tricks, ideas or confirmation that it will never work would be appreciated.
Have a good weekend!

http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores...ping_googlebaseGet yourself one of the above. Set it in water where you see minnow activity. Let it settle then throw some bread crumbs over it. When activity is the thickest, just pull it up quick and you'll have all the minnows you can stand. Good Luck!

We caught at least a hundred med. to large with the occasional jumbo golden shiners in about five minutes this past Monday using 2 of them. It was in a pond at my uncles farm we call the "minner tank" I toss in a few chunks of old bread or the like, as well as sprinkling crumbs about it like texcajun suggest, The depth of placement can be critical. Some days they prefer deeper, cooler water, so we sink it in water deep enough to where we can't see it. More often than not we'll sink it in just enough water to halfway cover the funnel shaped entrantce. leaving it just a yard or so from the bank. placement depth can make differce in catching shiners, small bream, or both.

You can also use them for crawdads. Just use a piece of scrap meat for bait. I've also enlarge the holes in them and caught bigger sunfish for trotline bait.

We use to make our own out of like 20 ounce dr pepper bottles by cutting the bottle where it starts to funnel towards the cap. Then you just flip that part inside out and bingo! And aslo for some reason chocolate chip granola bars are good bait

Questions: 1) How do you secure the 'funnel' to the bottle? 2) Do you put holes in the bottle so it sinks? 3) Anyone have a link to a diagram for any of these contraptions? Thx in adv.

as a kid my grandpa made them out of a mason jar and screen wire .just use the ring to secure screen wire.put a piece of string around the top and use cornmeal. If you build it....they will come!

Sorry, I had not replied, been out of town all weekend. Sounds like they are definitely worth a shot. We always caught perch, but I can't remember ever actually catching minnows. However, I am not 100% sure that it will work well at our boat slip, since it is not as close to the shore. Maybe putting it down under a light would help. Either way, I had enough positive responses to spend the $10 and try it out. Thanks all!

My dad used them a lot when I was a kid to catch trotline bait. He rarely used bait in them when going for minnows. When he wanted perch, he would add bread or sheets of aluminum foil. Something about the flash attracted perch.
