Got minnows headed up river to rapids. Saw fish in two to six feet of water. Would not touch the bait. Caught two blacks ten inchers one perch. Cats would not touch bait either. Lures nada. Schools of twenty or so seen. Fished a three mile stretch from pops up towards english. Gave it a shot just for the heck of it. You never know til you try. Talked to many people no luck either. Six was the most caught. Are there just more whites in the nueces or do they not run up river at medina strong. Why if so are there more whites in nueces. They reproduce better mortality rate higher. Same with guad. Hmm wish i knew.

I was also up at Pop's on Sunday....we paddled down river and fished the boulders about a mile down river. Caught several blacks all about 12" on live minnows. I was throwing a rattletrap and then a chartruese roadrunner without a single hit. Are the white bass down river towards the lake or up river towards English Crossing? I can't find them!!! Help!!

good luck. there are some up in the river. just not many. my neighbor was down there all day on saturday and only caught about 20 on minnows. my dad was there at the rapids on saturday evening and only caught one on lures. we were catching some small ones at leibolds point trolling a few weeks back, but those seem to have gone away to. they are in the lake.

Rob, there are crappie in and around those boulders. I only caught three there, but could see them on the fish finder. Just couldn't get them to hit. One was a two pounder. There are some nice largemouth in there too. Pitch crawdad pattern stuff around the boulders.

If you have a motor, check out the next bend of boulders further down across from Leibolds point. Caught a few crappie and a bunch of bass there too.

whites are thick in the main lake, in the northern ends of the big coves. find the creek channel, and you will find the whites and hybrids, and some big crappies too. cuaght a nice mix of whites, hybrids, crappie and bass and even one yellow cat trolling crankbaits this weekend. they are apparently spawning more in the lake rather than the river. I fished the river previous four weekends, with pretty poor results. did much, much better in the coves.

I got to agree with Novato... the whites are in the coves - especially those with a creek channel running through them. I've been on the lake the last couple of weekends fishing for largemouth and it doesn't fail we end up with a good stringer of whites during the outing! Here are some pics: Flickr

Is there a better place to launch that would put me closer to the northern coves? All I have is my trusty canoe which I usually launch from Pop's.....it seems like a long way to paddle back, especially if I happen to be solo....any ideas?

If you go around through Bandera and take Wharton's Dock road and follow it all the way out to the the end where it runs into a small park near the mouth of the river it will put you closer by a couple of miles. Disclaimer: I used to own property there, and access was pretty easy as you could just pull up to the shore and launch, but times change and you may have to deal with some property owners organization now, but you could check it out and if you can't launch at the lake you probably still would be able to launch at Wharton's Dock which would be a little closer a paddle than Pop's.
Just one more cast!

Rob, you can put in at park road 37 ramp, and fish lots of coves in that area with a canoe. That's what I do. I have fished the southern coves, but there are some good northern coves to the left and righ of the ramp also.
