I fished 3 days out of Delacroix, last week, post
Arlene, but had a wonderful time. Fished with
Capt. Jeff Dauzat,
http://www.finandfeathersguides.com
We started monday morning working a few flocks
of birds, but the trout were not the size we
were after. We headed out into Breton Sound,
nothing happening at the first stop. Second
stop was supposed to be a bull red hangout, but
was full of big gafftops. Almost every cast
(bait or artificial) was hammered by a 5 to 10 lb
sailcat. I was having a ball, but Capt Jeff was
not impressed by my catfish catching ability.
A short move put us on trout. We
put 44 nice trout on ice. A few bonus white
trout, and sheephead made for a nice mess of fish.
We were also entertainded by the occasional
ladyfish and sailcat.
Day two was to be the redfish tour in the marsh.
We started fishing the tail end of the falling
tide, so it was a challenge. We caught a lot
of fish, but many were undersized. I caught
one rat red with 7 spots on each side, I took
that as a good omen. We kept 16 good trout, 6 slot reds, and a few sheeps and sand trout.
Day three started back out in Breton Sound,
but the weatherman lied to us on the wind
forecast. The heavy chop did not bother us too much, but the wind was blowing against a weak tide, and the fish in the sound shut off. Back to the
marsh. Inside, we had better water movement
and the fishing was better. The redfish bite was
on, we iced 10 slot reds, released one bull and
several rats. My buddy(who does not get to fish
nearly as much as he needs to) finally got
the feel for the trout bite the last afternoon.
I was happy to see him finally catch some nice
trout. If he would have helped on day one,
we would have had some more impressive numbers.
The largest red of the trip , I caught on
a gold spoon. He hit about 3 feet off the bank,
circled the boat one time then peeled off
about 100 yards of 12 lb test. Took about 10 minutes to coax him back to the boat for
pictures and release.
The fishing was actually a little slow for
the area ( again we were fishing one day after
Arlene passed just to the east ) But We had
a great time and came back with 6 gallons of
trout and redfish fillets.
Pictures tomarrow , Hopefully

Lodging in Delacroix is a bit of a problem. No
motels. there are fish camps, houses and " condos"
for rent. Most are geared for large groups , sleep 6-8 people and run 150- 200/night.
We stayed in Chalmette the first night at
an econolodge that was a dump. 30 minutes from
the marina. no resturants in delacroix, you have
to go back to Chalmette. We ate at Rocky & Carlos,a hole in the walls spot, but for $10.00 we got a osyter/shrimp combo plate that was huge,
We ate all we could and made several PO-boys from
the left overs. $1.50 longnecks were nice
also.
Drove 45 minutes to Slidel one night to
eat at Copelands , excellent food, worth the
drive.
How were the accomodations in Buras ?

The accomodations in Buras were excellent! Cajun Fishing Adventures has 2 large lodges, swimming pool, big screen TV and the best food in Louisiana! Staying there with meals and a guide each day is about $350/per person.

When I was headed down Breton Island, we spent the night at Hideaway Lodge. We only had 3 people in a room that would sleep 10 for $80 total. It was really nice and right off of hwy 23.

Aaaa...Delacroix...you bring back memories. In my 10 year stent in Slidel, I learned to love Delacroix island and those huge shrimp Poboys we would get in Chalmette on the way home. I tell people here in Houston that we (3 fisherman) would go out of Delacroix to Breton sound in the morning and be back at Slidel by 10AM with 75 big trout (16 to 24 inchers) on a regular basis in the summer.
They don't believe me.
I know it's because they have never experienced the quality of fishing the Louisiana delta has to offer. fish
