I remember seeing something someone asked in a "new too fly fishing thread" about getting started and what too buy. I remember someone replying something about a rod with yarn tied too the end of it and casting it until the back cast to forecast postion doesnt pop during the cast. I tried too find the post but i couldnt find it. Anyone remember or know what this is about? i know my casting can use some help so i was curious if there was a simple setup such as this i could practice with without taking out my flyrod. thanks!

I'm not sure if you're talking about just tying a piece of yarn on the end of your leader or one of the indoor practice rods. If you just want to get outside and practice, just tie a piece of yarn on the end of a 9 foot leader and give it a go. If your looking for something you can just tool around with inside I'd check out one of these or make your own http://www.madriveroutfitters.com/p-2719-wulff-fly-o-practice-rod.aspxIf you're experience a pop in your back cast you're probably casting tailing loops. I know there's an exhaustive thread on the subject somewhere in this forum. If you're brand new to the sport you really need to get a casting lesson or get someone who knows there stuff to work with you for a few hours. I don't think you can just "figure it out" on your own so to speak." I'd also recommend getting some of Lefty Kreh's casting DVD's. Really good stuff.

That's a long way from me. But, we'll be teaching a casting class at the FFF Expo on May 7 somewhere close to the riverwalk.
My casting class will be free, but there is a fee to enter the Expo. I know it is a month away, but the Expo will be a great opportunity to learn about fly tying and to learn something about casting.
If you practice in the grass to improve your casting (something I highly recommend) you don't have to have yarn or anything else tied to your leader, but you MUST HAVE A LEADER tied to your flyline to prevent damage to the flyline. The yarn is very useful after you learn the basic cast and start working on accuracy casts, but it is optional for general casting practice.

OK, I just re-read some of the posts. If you are hearing a "pop" on the backcast, that means that you are not "pausing" long enough for your line to straighten out before starting your forward cast. You need to wait for the loop to unroll before starting the forward cast. And remember that the longer the amount of line that you are casting, the longer you have to wait before starting your forward cast. This is often referred to as "timing" and it something that you will have to learn to adjust as you change casting distances.
Good luck, Rex

Gib: There is a great FFF (Federation of Fly Fishers) chapter in San Antonio called Alamo Flyfishers. They often have free casting clinics at various parks around San Antonio. Check out their website at: http://www.alamoflyfishers.org/

I'll second Mick's recommendation. Local FF'ing clubs are wonderful sources of help.

Mick and Rex have great suggestions. Another thing you might try is going to Bass Pro Shops. I don't know where else they list their classes, but if you look in the elevator by the fish tanks they usually have a schedule of up coming classes posted there. They offer a free fly casting class most months.
FISH ON!!! ummmmm off
