Took fly rod out, new redington 5 wt. Was casting pretty heavily trying to get some line out. I think maybe the rod loosned. I heard a crack and then the top three sections where in the water. Checked it out, put it back together and continued fishing with no problems, but conserned. The pole is split into four sections. Each section has a male and female end. On the second section (the one that connects to the first section or the section with the handle and reel) I could not see any cracks in the actual rod. The epoxy or glue ,covering the threading that lines the female portion of the rod, has a few threads broken and the epoxy is broken off. Like I said the inner diameter of the female portion does not apear to be ccracked or broken. I read somewhere to put candle wax to help seal and keep the rod sections from coming apart and breaking should I send it back or maybe glue the two peices to geter, or just not worry about it?
Got plenty of lures but dad gum fish just wont cooperate. Wannabe fisherman in training.

Damn four peice flyrod. You know they are if any good when they are a three peice.
It's more than the catfish would do.

Some suggestions:
1. take it back to where you bought it or send it back to Redington. It should have some kind of warranty.
2. Get casting lessons.
3. The harder you try to cast it, the worst your fly delivery will become. Lighten up. Thinking you can POWER the fly out there is probably the worst thing you can do. Casting is a ballet of fly line, fly rod flex, and your casting stroke. The easiest to mess up is the casting stroke...
4. On the new rod (assuming it is replaced), just use Nose Grease on the male joint to allow it to enter easily and be removed easily. DO NOT EVER GRAB THE LINE GUIDES. They will break off and you are then hosed...
Good luck...

Wow, that's weird. I have a Redington 5 weight, and I've found it to be an amazingly good and reliable rod, especially for the price.

I'd definitely take it back.

Most Redington rods (except the Crosswater and Minnow lines) are covered by lifetime warranties. If you have a rod from any of their other five lines of rods, send it back and they will take care of it.

I have a Crosswater that cracked on me after barely any use. It does have a year warranty I believe. I would still take it back. As long as you have your receipt, you should be fine. They tried to rookydo me on that deal, because at first I couldn't find my receipt. Once I did they honored it.

SO TRUE! I know I will butcher the quote, but Norman Maclean wrote about this in A River Runs Through It. When he talks about learning to cast from his father he talks about the art of throwing a fly by saying that it is an art practiced between 10 and 2 o'clock. The phrase that sticks when me when I have troubles casting goes something like this, "Art comes from grace, and grace doesn't come easy." Read the book. Maclean is ten times the write I will ever be, but I keep working.... The long and short is that I have had the rod come apart, and it happened when I was trying to cast too hard.
