Make them open tournaments without membership fees. I am a "member" of a couple of clubs. I fished one of your events once and didn't feel like a member of anything just that I had paid extra. It was a well run torunament. I don't really care about a championship, it's just another event to me.
$100 per team is right for my budget. If I wanted to spend more then I have other alternatives with higher payouts due to the larger fields. I think the moderate income guys are priced out of most trails. I would like to test my ability against more than just my club anglers but $200-$250 is out of my range.
I also would like to see individual events on Saturdays. It seems most circuits have their team events on Sat and individual on Sundays. I'm in church on Sundays and rarely fish that day.

I also think a $75 individual tourney would appeal to a lot of people. No championship needed. Just an open circuit that is affordable.

Question, not a defense of Mark. Most of the above posts speak of a no membership fee and a lower entry fee. How would a tournament director/owner make money for putting on the trail? It is a business venture for them no matter how you look at it.
My 2 cents to the poll, $200 entry fee is really right but if you could double entries and increase payouts with a lesser entry fee Im all for it. - Championship is just another tournament if I have to pay an entry fee to fish it, so really would prefer money at the events, maybe just a nice trophy for AOY - Website is an issue, guys like to see the results as fast as possible and the most successful trails seem to update the same day or day after - Not listed, Membership Fee, I dont have a solution to this one without raising the entry fee a few dollars to cover or holding an extra percent.

Mark,
As you know I think you do a great job. I decided to fish one of your trails this year even though the expense of it just on entry fee alone went up 25 percent. After taking my Butt kicking so far I have come to realize that I will probably look for a cheaper trail next spring in the $100 to $120 range per team.
I am currently in a club and our entry is $80 per team and I can honestly say I enjoy fishing that more than JCO at $200. The entry for me at this time is just to high to enjoy the competition.

And I will answer, and this is not an attack on you or Mark- His (IMO) flawed business model in an already over saturated market, with a shrinking base to draw from, is not the Forums, nor the fishermans problem. It's not my job to make ANY TD money. That's his job via sponsorship, marketing, etc. If you provide something better than what's out there, you will draw. If you are just doing a 'me too' trail, you will not in this market.

As a guy who only fishes a few opens and an owner's tourney each year, I agree with several of you about the number of trails. Don't get me wrong, sticking a good fish in a tournament is infinitely more exciting than when fun fishing, but, the number of trails is overwhelming. As much as I love this forum, I really don't like having to get on here every Friday just to see where I can fish the next day without being surrounded by so many tournaments. When guys in tournaments are courteous, I'll gladly give them my water, but with my top 4 being Palestine, Tyler, Fork, and Pines, I'm dodging big tournaments all the time.

I agree with Frank here. Unlike some, I like the Sunday aspect, since so many other tournaments and most Club activities are on Saturday. That's why I like the Grapevine Series tournaments so much. Affordable entry fee. No membership fee and a Sunday team tournament. If we had the same format, and put it on Hubbard and Tawakoni, I'm there.

But holding back the same percentage from the open's (or one time events) put on doesn't seem right when that money doesn't go towards any championship really doesn't add up to me.
Some of that percentage is Profit...nothing wrong with it. Advertising, Website hosting bill, maintenance on scales & Equipment, flyers, Fuel, time & work to put on a tournament.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks Mark runs a quality tournament and that the price is fine. I don't mind paying a membership fee once a year. For all the hard work Mark and his wife put into these tournaments, they deserve to make a little money for their efforts. This is the first year we are fishing with JC due to the saturday format. Most anglers want a well run tournament and weigh-in where the director is vocal in informing contestants updated standings, etc and a well run website with fairly immediate results. In my opinion, I believe Mark is providing just that and that's why I'm proud to be fishing with JC Outdoors Texoma.

Mark runs a great trail. And I enjoyed fishing it . But I think alot of people are doing what I have been forced to do and thats fish the trails that are drawing the most boats for what ever reason. Thats were the money is pure and simple. I wish the west trail would draw them but its not. IMO if it were me I would concentrate on the JC trails that were drawing the most for JC and slowly build back as the economy builds back. Pure and simply there are to many trails and divisions of the ones that are here now. Look at the 1 trail that draws the most. There not over done by no means they have a higher entry then most and still draw from all over the state. I wish they were a little closer west but oh well.

Mark I think of you as good people. In better times I enjoyed your Lake Fork trail. Your in a tough place. You can't get big until you are big. I do not know what the number is that makes it profitable/workable for you and rewarding enough for the angler. I do not think you will get much of a difference between $200 and $100, certainly not enough to reach the tipping point. No membership fee opens may help introduce you to the market and help build a following. The RHBC has held an open once or twice a year for several years on Hubbard at the $50-$60 price point and we usually draw 30ish teams. Some things that helped me to want to fish your trail: - On Fork I thought I had a chance at the money because of the slot factor.
- Sometimes there was food
- It was more of a family friendly atmosphere with less of the tournament ego macho bull surroundings.
Some things you might try: - A big bass/small bass tourney - one fish evens the field for those that are not jack potters.
- Maybe bass are not the right target
- I am not a fan but maybe summer night tournaments
I hope you figure it out; like I said, you are good people.

It's hard for an angler to sign up early, so they can fish thursday and friday knowing you were pulling 5-10 boats during a fall trail. Try doing away with the off limits and lower your entry on the Texoma trail. Watch how many boats Future pulls this Saturday with a $130 entry.
If I heard correctly at the weigh in, you changed the date of the championship to the 10th and 11th of September!? I think that might hurt your Texoma numbers because now guys are having to decide whether to fish your championship out of Alberta Creek or Chargers championship out of Catfish Bay
I've fished events with JC and have had fun. The weigh-ins were ran good. I hope you can get the answerers you're looking for and can start pulling those 50+ boat events. Good luck and will see you next weekend on Texoma.
